Need distributor advice 89 5.8

I bought a 1989 F250 4x4 ex-cab/long box with a 5.8/C6 to replace my 89 7.3idi/zf5 plow truck. It has a remanufactured 5.8 with less than 20K miles on it. I got it for a great price at $250 US but the owner said it will sometimes stall in the Summer when hot and not want to start until it cools down again. I drove it home with no issues. I'm assuming the TFI module is likely the culprit.

To get it running and bypass other possible issues in the dizzy(PIP), what new drop in dizzy is recommended? I know members have complained about aftermarket dizzy's being problematic. I'm up in Canada so a MSD type unit costs me about $600 CAD after exchange, taxes, etc. And I've heard members say these units can have issues as well. The local NAPA quoted me around $230 CAD but I read those are junk as well.

I do have a 95 F150 parts truck with the roller 5.8 and remote mounted TFI setup I plan to put on the 89 but Winter is almost here and I wanted to try and get it running before the snow flies. How easy is it to modify the 95 TFI wiring harness to work on the 89? Is it better to just swap the 95 dizzy into the 89 so I don't have to make a block off plate for the 89 dizzy? My current plow truck is running fine but I had the typical IDI oil pan rust issues that caused a small hole in the side of the oilpan. I had a buddy use a gas tank repair patch on the pan but I'm worried it may start to leak during the Winter and I'll be screwed.

Yeah that is one of the classic TFI failure modes.

You can't bypass the PIP.. just put a new grey TFI module on the dizzy and forget about it. None of the aftermarket parts are recommended because they are much less reliable than OEM and there are absolutely no gains to be had with any of them. A new Ford TFI module should last the life of the vehicle.. given your seasonal use.

Thanks Conanski. What I meant by bypass is just put a whole new dizzy instead of changing the TFI and finding out the PIP is bad, or shaft play, etc. What is the part number for the Motorcraft TFI? Any suggestions for a source for them?
Thanks.

Motorcraft - DY1074 (supercedes DY425)
Ford - 5U2J-12A297-AA, 5U2Z-12A297-A

Any good parts store will carry or can order one for you. If you can wait, try RockAuto. A site sponsor.

Thanks. But I've heard from a buddy who is a mechanic that Rockauto has substandard parts. That they buy blems and 2nd stock. He said to stay away from electrical parts especially. Is this just B.S? I bought a pair of brand name "professional" grade drums and one was badly out of round and I had to get it machined. A buddy bought shocks from RA and the welds on them were hideous.
I'm in a smaller community in northern Canada and the only parts store is NAPA. They said they only have "Ackland" brand TFI's which they say is made by Standard.

Rockauto doesn't seem to list them anymore. Just brands like Standard, Delphi, etc.

I found some DY-1074's on Amazon and Ebay for around $160US. What about this one? Or are these the ones Ford recalled? E43Z-12A297-A

I've never had an issue with electrical parts from RockAuto. If I ordered off-brand items, I got what I paid for. Sorry to see they are not carrying Motorcraft brand ICMs.

I do not think I would use the earlier version part number parts. There is a reason why they were upgraded. Searching on the Ford part number yields some positive hits on Amazon and other places stating they are truly Ford parts.
