Doing a disc swap using 73 donor spindles. After looking at it, looks like a may have a booster clearance problem due to running a 460 with tall valve covers.
I have already purchased a dual diaphragm booster off a 75 one ton, that I know will hook directly to the brake pedal, problem is im not sold the sucker will fit. I could probably send it back for a short output booster and run it on a cantilever bracket to give it some extra clearance but looks that 69's firewall was not meant to run a flat rod without some fab work.
Question is, has anyone fit a 7 or 8 inch dual diaphragm booster with 460/tall valve covers with the non cantilever oem brackets?
These for example:
If you're going to run an OEM bellcrank (cantilever) style firewall bracket to position the booster higher on the firewall, you'll have to trade your current long input rod dual diaphram booster in for a dual diaphragm booster with a short input rod.
You can pirate the bellcrank firewall bracket assembly from a '77-earlier Dentside truck to mount the booster to. The bracket doesn't have to come from a truck with a dual diaphragm booster. The bracket for the 11" single diaphragm booster will also work for the dual diaphragm booster. The bellcrank assembly will have a flat input rod on it.
The '78/'79 bellcrank assembly bracket will have a longer (flat) input rod which may require modification (shortening and drilling a new 5/8" hole in it to connect the input to the brake pedal). If you're going this route, it would probably be easier to use the '77-earlier style.
Thanks, Ultra. I happen to already have a bell crank bracket off a 73. But looking at the firewall it looks to be made for a long output booster. So I'd rather not run a bell crank. What is the diameter of the 75 F350 booster, Im guessing about 9? what brackets are you running. Also any idea where to pick up the hard plastic tube the output runs through?
I'm thinking if it wont fit, I'll go to a 7 or 8 inch dual dia and run universal, adjustable rod.
My (long input, non-bellcrank) dual diaphragm booster, firewall brackets and the plastic boot came from a '75 F350. I traded the donor booster in as a core.
The booster is 8.795".
I don't know of anyone that reproduces the hard plastic dust boot for these boosters. The dust boot will be the same whether it comes from a single diaphragm or dual diaphragm booster from a Bumpside or a Dentside truck. For an original boot, it would have to be sourced from a donor truck unless some NOS supplier has any.
There is a SIMILAR but not exact boot reproduced for GM vehicles. I don't know how compatible it is if a person tried to use one of these(?).
How much taller are the valve covers? I have a 460 in my '68 F250 and will measure the clearance tomorrow. I have the stock power drums with a large booster.
