New here and have recently bought a 2003 f250 6.0l 4x4, rust free, 6 spd manual, extended cab, long bed xlt with 83,000 miles. This will be my first diesel. Going to be using it for a 350 mile trip hauling a 27' camper, logs for my hobby sawmill, hay wagons and an occasional just plain driving truck.
I've read plenty of horror stories on this engine but I've also read plenty of good. I picked the truck up for $13,500 delivered to NY from South Dakota. I am expecting to at some point having to deal with some issues but I figured for the price and condition of the truck it will well be worth the investment. I'll be picking up a monitor of some sort, NOT A TUNER, before I drive it. Wish me luck.
You'll be fine as long as you don't put a tuner on it and rag it to heck and back.
Actually, ragging it out helps the turbo VGT unison ring stay clean and functional. There really is no secret to longevity other than keeping the filters and oil changed and only using mild tunes such as the Atlas 40 FICM tune.
Tuners that add 80+ HP are adding fuel and advancing the injection timing to increase cylinder pressures that cause premature head gasket failure. Also, the coolant is an issue if it hasn't been changed regularly, as sediment will form in the oil cooler, causing a clog and ultimately resulting in super-heated coolant being sent to the EGR cooler and causing a rupture. The best thing to do in this case is do run a series of VC-9 chemical cleaning treatments, drive it for a few days to allow any clogging of the oil cooler to happen, replace the oil cooler, install a coolant filter and replace the coolant with some of the ELC type.
Congrats on the new truck. Hard to find them with manual transmissions too. I've had mine for 13 years and I'm not getting rid of it. As much as I love them, my wife hates them just as much and doesn't want to learn to drive one, so it ensures no one else drives my truck lol.

Same here. My first three trucks were Ford's and manual. The last two have been Chevys and automatics. I am very much looking forward to getting back into a Ford. Too proud to own a Dodge...nothing against them....just too proud.
