Engine and Trany frame mounts

The parts of the frame that the engine and trany mount to on a 46 are members that are riveted to the frame. With the replacement of the flathead with a more powerful OHV, would it be a good idea, or not, to reinforce the rivets by welding to the frame?

Of course welding would be stronger, but I the rivets should hold up, unless there is any cracking or weakening of teh metal around the rivets. Unless we are talking about tons of torque, then I don't see any problems. I have not welded mine, I just left the rivets...don't forget all the crossmembers are riveted on. They should be plenty strong to keep the frame square.

The way I was told about this is that bridges are riveted because welds tear and/or break when they bend. On the '48-'60 forum most of guys replace their rivets with grade 8 bolts to stregnthen the members. Many of them also discovered that the rivets from the factory are not as perfect as they should be as they took them out.

If you put anything with alot of hp or tourque, it may be a good idea to box the frame to stregnthen it too.

Thanks for your help, which also answered another question I had on the rear spring hangers whcih are riveted to the frame. I removed them to replace the bushings, and then reattched them with grade 5 bolts. Wasn't sure if that was ok, or if they had to be riveted. Think I will change to grade 8.
