I just put a new engine and carb in my '84 F-150. I took it in for some warranty work on the motor. when I came to pick it up, the guy said, "son, your truck is running rich, and the choke housing is missing, if you run it rich like that, you'll screw up the rings and get alot of gas in the crankcase".
I don't know anything about carbs, but I now have my hands on a electric assist choke...
What I would like to know is how to set up the choke so It works well, and how do I tell if the carb is running rich? My truck isn't pumping out black smoke, but my gas mileage could stand to be better. How do I tune this carb? (carter 1 barrel) What screws do I play with?
Like the dude said, I don't want to mess up this new motor.
I'm sorry to sound like a rookie, but carbs are not my strong area.
I pretty sure that that gas/air mixture screw is at the bottom of the carb(on the base) and on the left side of the carb if you are standing in front of the truck. I had a 78 ranger with a 1 barrel carter. You can turn the screw all the way in clockwise for lean and ccw rich. Turn the screw in all the way in, turn turn it out 1.5 to 2 full turns. Have the truck running when you do this. The rpm naturally drop when the screw is in all the way but the truck shouldn't quite die. Then turn it ccw to 1.5 to 2 turns each carb runs different. I had taken my in to get a new reman one because my carb was junk and the choke was messed up. The new one ran good but it was slightly different than my old one. It mixture screw was in the same spot but both idle screws were on the other side on the reman carb.
