So I started digging into my '73 F250 4X4 yesterday, and it needs some work.
Front cab mounts are about shot, but the rest of the cab looks pretty good. Floors were done by PO, and the inside will probably get coated with Monstaliner or herculiner before I install a seat from a 2000 F150. I am also looking to move the fuel tank under the flatbed. I have installed rust repair panels before and sometimes it is more of a pain than it is worth, especially if they are paper thin.
Here are my questions:
Where do I get the best heavy duty cab mounts available or am I better off making my own? I want them to be at least the same thickness as factory. Nobody seems to list a thickness. Good fit would be a plus.
As for the fuel system, I am thinking of getting a hard line from say a 79 F350 with a rear tank, and using a Bronco II tank and sending unit. I don't think the fuel pump will be an issue, but do I need anything special to keep my gauge working?
What is the diameter of the fill neck on the Bronco II tank? I haven't seen this posted.
If anyone has info or a source on chassis-cab tanks working in these trucks I would like to here it too. A 30 gallon tank would be perfect.
Has anyone had any experience with fillerneck supply? I will need a chassis-cab filler neck?
if you havent already bought that seat see if you can find one out of a 88 to 96 truck. they bolt right in. switch the seat tracks and go. as for the in cab tank first ask why? is it leaking? it would be last on the list if it was me. its not that unsafe if the fill neck hose and fuel line is good. as for cab mounts well everyone ive seen from the aftermarket looks the same.
Thanks for the response. I have been looking for about a year now and around here (western MA) junkyards kind of suck, and a any 96 or older seat I have seen is toast. I already bought the seat, they are manual seats and I don't think mounting them will be a problem.
I'm not worried about safety with the tank, just want room in the cab, it kind of stinks, and I can't seem to not drip gas on my paint when I fill it up. A little extra capacity would be nice too, this thing is thirsty! I wouldn't be doing it to an original truck.
A call to JBG tells me their cab mounts are 20 guage, which sound thin. I have also noticed that some places sell them for around $35 and some are around $80, I figured there might be a difference. No one else I called can tell me the thickness. This is a hard working truck and I only want to do this once, it has to last. I might make my own out of 1/8" steel.
DC is prolly thicker and better engineered. JBGs might be Taiwanese repro.
That would be my guess too: DC's business model is they buy original Ford tooling and try to make things to factory spec in the US. Usually if you find something a lot cheaper, it's a reproduction made in China (or Taiwan, etc.).
