Here is a weird one...

Has anyone EVER heard of a distributor (New, HEI) only firing on the #1 cylinder?

Here is what happened Saturday. Went to road test the 77 after the rewire and other changes. I made the mistake of buying a reman'd Ebelbrock 1406 carb. After warming the rig up for 10 minutes, (running smooth, timed, adjusted) I took the rig down the street. It ran a little rough, then I did a U-turn at the cul-de-sac and it stalled. I tried to restart and no luck.

I popped the hood, took off the air cleaner and the carb was FULL of fuel. Like it looked like a fuel container. The butterflies were closed and the gas was dripping out the linkage ports it was so full.

I got hooked up and towed 5 houses back. I took the rest of the day to think about what had happened. Sunday morning, went and purchased a NEW Edelbrock 1411. NO MORE REMANUFACTURED CARBS EVER! Got a 1" riser for it. My manifold has 4 holes (Identical, not quadrajet) so I got the riser with the corresponding holes and new gaskets.

Prior to installing the carb, I took my small shop vacuum and cleaned out the intake of residual fuel. Changed the plugs (Autolite Platinum) and put the battery charger on the main battery at 12v trickle or 2 amp charge. Just for reference, so you have the full story: The tank is not new but newer and clean. The truck had both fuel filters replaced last month during all the other work I was doing.

I did not touch ANY wiring. Correction, I touched the plug wires one at a time to replace the plugs.

I installed the new carb and did a test fire. The truck really wanted to start, but only once during the revolution. I did the typical check the coil for power...got it. Check the plugs for spark... number one, yes. Numbers 2-8, no.

Now, I have the petronix flame thrower II HEI setup. The only wires involved in the ignition are: 12v power from the ignition to the coil, and power from the coil to the dist and ground from the coil to the dist.

Has anyone ever heard of the dist only firing on the number 1 cylinder?

I went to the race shop, got a refund on the carb and told them about the dist issue. They had never heard of problems with the petronix products and were at a loss as well. They gave me another dist to replace the one in there and then I will return that first one for my money back.

You may have washed down the cylinders with fuel. Does the oil smell like gas?

Changed the oil and filter before putting on the new carb and attempting to start again.

I was concerned about the gas going by the rings as well.
