Driving w/out Oil Cap Question

My 79 F150 had a slight oil leak. The other we were leaving to go to relatives for the holiday. I checked the oil in the truck, and noticed that the cap was missing. Never seemed to fit right to begin with, so I wasn't shocked to see it gone.

I took the cap off one of my cars and put it on. The lod cap was one of the chrome one with a series of holes around the rim and a filter inside. The one off the car just fits on snug.

After driving to the relatives I noticed that I am hemoraging oil. I had to add 2 quarts to it, and drove it 20 miles to work this morning, its hemoraging again.

My question is is this cap causing too much pressure and making my leak worse. I stuck a lint free rag in this morning, and drove 10 miles and stopped. Very little leak, but I was afraid that the reag may get hot and go up flames.

My question is, can I drive it the 45 miles home w/out a cap? I grabbed some oil this morning to put in on the way home.

Driving w/out Oil Cap Question

You're right, you need a vented cap like it had before. Any auto parts store should carry one.

It would be best to find the correct cap. Driving with no cap will make a mess, and oil on a hot engine isn't a good idea.
