i just bought an 86 F150 with the 300 inline six in it, 250000 or so mileson it, and it runs great, except when it warms up and your in gear, once you come to a stop itll stall out, but she will start right up, any suggestions, i love this truck and wanna keep it running as long as i can, i just got a c6 trans, and have a 351C layin around my shop that im planning on building up and putting in but i wanna keep the six running as good as i can, thanks for your help.
hey guys.....one lil problem with all that info, my truck is SUPPOSED to have the EEC-IV system, but it has been ripped outta the truck, along with most of the sensors, so im havin lots of fun, but i was wondering if you guys know where i could get an older normal 1bbl carb, and a non computer controlled distributor for my motor, since i dont have much computer crap on it now, i think i wanna just rip the rest off and have it like it was in the old days
Does the truck sit without a lot of driving? I am finding that my truck runs poorly with gas over a few weeks old. If I put some Marvel Mystery Oil in a new tank of gas it runs great and does not stall at idle.
nope she doesnt sit, i drive it every day, also murrays has the carb for 120, the distributor for 50, anyone know where i could get a new wireing harness for the truck, mine is pretty well torn up, thanks
I had the exact problem with my 86 300 and was able to go to the junkyard and pickup the complete ignition system for $20 used dist ignition module and the small wiring harness from an early 80's 300. The wiring is a direct plug in to the factory harness with no splicing (plugs into harness on drivers side fender). The feedback carb will run way rich if it does not have the computer sensors and TFI ignition to run it so you will have to put an older carb on as well. My truck would "load up" and flood out after it was warm and to get it to start you would have to hold the choke closed to clean it out. After switching to an older carb I finally went to a four barrel and wouldn't go back. I am not to good with wiring or I may have tried to retro some newer 4.9 fuel injection onto it.
thanks for the info, i think thats what im gonna do, i have some good blowby in her now,she doesnt stall out as much anymore, ive been playing with the carb n vaccum leaks, but defiantley a junkyard trip this week, do you guys have any reason for the computer to have been totally ripped out??
After all the trouble i went through trying to get mine to run right I pulled my computer out and sold it on E-Bay! As I side note after I had the problems with mine running rich fixed an old timer told me to slowly pour water in the carb while running it at fast idle (2500 rpm) to clean out the carbon buildup from running rich. I was a bit hesitant but tried it and could'nt believe the amount of carbon that blew out the exhaust! I was finally able to get it to idle and accelerate crisply after doing this. He told me that the water temporarily raises the compression causing the carbon to burn off the valves and pistons and the water also breaks up the deposits. Has anybody else tried this? Maybe I will ask that question as a topic?
