94 ranger major coolant loss.

1994 4.0 auto trans. the truck was purchased 10 days ago by a friend. repair papers show new radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat from a very reputable shop in town a month ago (and about 10 miles driven on the truck since that was done).
welp, trans went out while her husband was goin to work last Monday, which other than the 30 mile ride home was the only other mileage they put on it. trans was rebuilt. shop called her this morning to say they checked the coolant level.it was low and knowing there were new components the cooling system may have needed to be burped. welp, they said there is an internal leak as its losing a pretty large amount of coolant rather fast. now, i turn wrenches myself, just not breaking into transmissions. ive had to replace blown head gaskets and intake gaskets in the past, but the coolant loss wasn't as massive as what im hearing. i don't have the vehicle here yet, but im wonderin if the intake gasket could have that catastrophic of a failure to have that much coolant loss. or even a head gasket could blow out that bad. or cracked head?
i know im gonna be tearin into it starting tomorrow, just runnin it through my mind now and lookin to see if anyone else may have had( HOPEFULLY) and intake gasket fail so bad it loses massive amounts of coolant.

Is the coolant going into the oil, or do you have clouds of white smoke out the exhaust? If neither, then look for an external leak, loose radiator hose, leaking thermostat gasket, or heater hoses, freeze plugs.

trucks not here yet to know. still at the trns shop, which is closed on the weekend, so wont be until Monday. shp said coolant wasn't goin onto the ground, but the amount they say they have had to keep putting in it sounds rather strange. no white smoke either.

Lets think about this some more. Only so many places for coolant to go. If the coolant drop isn't showing signs of an external leak on the ground, the engine isn't making steam/white smoke, then pull the dip sticks & look to the engine or tranny oil sumps for signs of coolant contamination, or look in the cabin on the passenger side foot well for a wet carpet, or the shop never fully filled & burped the cooling system to begin with.
