So I've reached the point of exhaust replacement on my '67 F100, 352, 3 on the tree and have read tons of posts about mufflers and such. I have decided on Hooker Long Tubes, and here are the options I posed to both a Magnaflow Tech. and my local "been doing this for years" muffler shop:
Magnflow Tech. recommended the DI/DO for moderate to aggressive tones
Local shop says "You don't want that setup anywhere near that truck...Those mufflers are for newer trucks...Go buy two stock mufflers and run them straight from the headers to the rear...", even drew me a picture which did NOT include an X-pipe of any sort!
Excluding cost...You guys have any thoughts on 1 or 2, or is there a better #3? It's all about sounding good without setting off car alarms for me
I had the Magnaflow setup similar to what your talking about on a 69 F350 with a 390 2bbl and stock manifolds.......It sounded healthy, with enough extra sound and a deeper tone to be noticeable, but not bothersome.

I would be inquisitive and asked the local shop WHAT makes "that setup" for newer model trucks and WHY he recommended stock mufflers, duals, with no X or H pipe. Then based on his reason, evaluate if it's smoke he's blowing out his piehole or whether it is based on fact or sound principles.
I did just that, and after I realized he was sticking to his "I've been doing this for years" approach, I let him have his say, thanked him for his time and left. Since I've only seen two other trucks like mine within 100 miles of me, I know his opinion was NOT based off of doing this setup before.
It kind of pissed me off at first, then it was just funny listening to him!

Ah.. I see... one of those "trust me" shops with no facts to back up the claim.

Sounds like your typical old guy, set in his ways and kinda closed minded to new ways simply because they are "new."
Looking forward to your end results, and would love to see finished pictures and hear your review.
I vote for headers, an "H" pipe, and high flow mufflers of your choice. IMHO an "x" pipe is meant for higher flow than I am assuming you will be doing. This is a street truck not one of Bobby's barn burners, correct? Lighter vehicles with a quick revving motor spinning 7000 or 8000 RPM are better suited for an X. Years ago I saw a chart comparing the two. It took a long time up the RPM scale before the X finally started beating the H. It's all about balancing out the exhaust pulses and the scavenging effect.
The Magnaflow DI/DO X-pipe mufflers sound very nice, especially when both pipes come out the passenger side in front of the tire. Just go with at least the 18" long case one or it'll be too loud. I've done several of these on Lightnings, sound is great!
