Help! 1948 f1 with 1951 bed??

Hi all!! New to the forum and looking for a little advice? Any ideas!!
Building a 48 f1 for my daughter. Problem is I have a 51 (smooth) looking bed with 48 fenders. Looking for options? Trying to save a buck...
1. Cut fenders and running boards to fit. (Cheap)
2. Buy later fenders to fit bed. (Will they line up with running boards?,sell 48 steel fenders)
3. Buy 48 bed.($$$$)

I live in Cali. So used parts aren't readily available.

Any ideas are appreciated!!
Thanks Steve

Welcome Steve! First, saying that you live in Cali. and used parts are not readily available is like saying you live in Cali., but there's just not enough sunshine there as compared to the rest of the country. It seems California and the West in general is where most of the surviving trucks went to die. You should try finding parts here in the rust belt.

I think it all depends on the condition of your "correct" 48-50 rear fenders. If they are original steel and in good condition, you probably want to buy a replacement box (or at least those two side pieces with the raised panel). On the other hand, if your box is in great shape, you may want to check with Dennis Carpenter about their new reproduced steel rear fenders or just go with fiberglass. Northern Classic Trucks sells a bunch of the replacement pieces for the beds. I would highly recommend that you don't try to hammer those fenders flat or try to cut them. It's probably not gonna look right without a lot of effort.

As far as the running boards go, I don't think there is a difference.

Running boards are interchangeable, the 48-50's have an extra "apron" that extends in to cover the M/C and some other stuff..

I have a good '51 RH rear fender, and '51 LH that needs a lot of work. I wonder if it would be worth cutting off the flange on the LH fender and patching yours to make the flange straight?

I used fiberglass fenders and a 51 bed and the running boards lined up ok. Got the fenders from Bebops and am well pleased with them. Also have fiberglass boards. <a href="http://s247.photobucket.com/user/Larry48fi/media/101_0386_zps28c62e22.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg131/Larry48fi/101_0386_zps28c62e22.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 101_0386_zps28c62e22.jpg"/></a>

Here's where I have you beat, Ross.

I'm in Northern Cali and have several pairs of good 51-52 rear fenders.

Email sent to you through FTE.

welcome to FTE
sounds like you need a 48-50 box to put your fenders on. I've got 2 48-50 beds and fenders available in salt lake. both would need some work though.

I've seen where people have used the 48 fenders on the flat bedsides with that beaded filler strip/trim (forget what its called ) but wasn't real super noticeable? most folks might not ever notice?

what is the difference between 48-50 and 51-52 rear fenders? I thought they were all the same.

48-50 beds have the raised panel sculptured sides where the 51-2 bed is flat. The early fenders have a notch in the attaching flange that fits around the raised panel area. Size and shape-wise, they're the same.

Ignore the phone spare tire bump, but you can see the step in the flange here.

48 - early 50 had a raised edge on the bed side and late 50-52 were flat sided beds

Raised bed side

Hey Steve,
Welcome aboard!

I'm slow over here - still trying to see what the challenge
is? Is your current bed good but you'd prefer the '48 with the
semi-circle sides, etc.? You are worried that the '48 fenders won't fit on the '51 bed?

The '48-'50 beds are a lot more expensive than later beds
in reproduction. Seems like the smooth sided process is a little easier to manufacture. The original '48-'50 beds had a steel floor over a wooden support structure. Man - I'm not sure I'd try to duplicate that.
Here is a pic of our '50 bed with a wood floor in place of the original metal flooring.

Good luck over there.

You can always try to trade either the bed or the fenders to get what will make a complete set.
