I have a '93 Explorer with a 4.0L Pushrod V6. I get black smoke from the exhaust shortly after startup and it wants to stall constantly. The EEC readout (Key On, Engine Off) gives a code 33 EGR-Valve Not Open, but I can't find the EGR valve. The Haynes manual shows the EGR location on a 4.0L SOHC V6, but NOT the 4.0L Pushrod V6. Before I got the EEC readout, the plugs, plug wires and Throttle Position Sensor were replaced with no improvement. Does this model even have an EGR valve? If so, where is it? If not, what else could it be? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
The EGR valve is probably not the problem. It's probably the hoses on the DPFE sensor. The DPFE sensor approximates EGR flow by measuring the pressure across an orifice in the EGR tube. When the DPFE hoses are cracked it can't do that. If I remember correctly the DPFE is located on the driver's side up by the intake manifold. It has one wiring harness connector with (I think) 4 wires, and two hoses that look like vacuum lines. The sensor is usually silver, but some are black and is about 1.5"x3.5"x.75". If the hoses aren't cracked and falling apart, you can follow the EGr tube up to the EGR valve. Also check the EVR solenoid for problems.
I am curious. Has any one resolved their issue with the black smoke. I have noticed everyone has replaced just about everything on there vehicle to resolve this issue with out luck. Like everyone else I also have been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what the problem is. Also there is not an EGR on a 95. Crazy thing is I don't even see a PCM on the firewall that everyone is talking about. The only thing that looks close to it is the rectangle box for the breaks. IF any one has the solution can you please share it.
