Where To Lokk For Leaky Head Gasket

I have read alot of posts about bad head gaskets on the 5.4 in the Expedition as a new owner of an Expedition and new to these forums where do I begin to check for this costly problem. If I crawl under the truck (98 XLT) and look around the block and heads and see a little moisture with dirt is that a sure sign of a leaky head gasket with no loss of power or performance? I have 68,000 miles on my truck so I would say it is safe to assume after 5 years it will get a little a little messy below, or should it be squeaky clean down below??? Any suggestions

The leaky head gasket didn't affect '98's. If you happen to see some moisture, it could be coming from under the valve covers or somewhere else.

What years do the leaky head gasket affect? Is the Triton V8 in my 98 any different than the others? I was under the impression that 97-02 were all the same? I do notice that my emblems just say XLT and some expeditions say TritonV8 them does this go by year

The 5.4L was enhanced with higher performance heads in 1999 (I think some '99's got them and some didn't) which resulted in around 30 more HP, suffice it to say no '98's got the new heads. With the new heads came the infamous oil leak problem.

If you still want to check, remove the fron t passenger side wheel. You will be able to see the valve cover through there.

Also if you have time, add some anti-size to the center of the rim, this is what get's it stuck. A little bit to the nuts will not hurt. And since you are at it do the other side...

Good luck!
