I have a 99 Expedition XLT w/ 66k. One of the problems I'm having is that when I start the truck while the engine is cold, every gauge in the cluster pegs out until the chime stops. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
That means your ECU is resetting itself. This problem has been discussed before, but I can't remember the fix. It has something to do with the ECU not getting a constant source of power. I would do a search about needles jumping and see what you can find.
I can't think of any real detrimental effects of the ECU constantly resetting itself, but the transmission might shift funny because it has a learning program (takes about 500 miles or so) that tailors the shift characteristics to your driving habits. Everytime the ECU is reset (usually through disconnecting the battery for 1/2 hour), the program has to start over.

OK....Can someone pls explain what the ECU is? Does it have to do with the computer system and is it fixable, or should I not worry about it? PLEASE HELP??!!!
Probably just your battery going bad. What you described is a classic example of this. The ECU is the PCM or Powertrain Control Module which is the computer that runs the show.
