I just purchased a 98 Eddie Bauer Expedition with 51000 miles, It is in perfect condition. I have been reading around the forum for a couple of days and stumbled on the thread about the spark plugs shooting out and now im worried. Is this something that I can prevent by checking to make sure they are tight or if they are gonna do it they just will. Also i am looking into adding some upgrades like a catbank and K&N but i dont want to kill my gas mileage, currently i am getting about 15MPG and i drive it failry hard. Any suggestiona would help for a newbie, i know nothing about the expedition except what i have read off the forum. So what ever you post is a learning experience for me.
The plug prob is supposedly caused by the spark plug hole being a tiny fraction too large which would have been done at machining. I guess you could pull the plugs out and reinstall some new multi-platinum plugs with loctite or the like.
K&N says their filters increase mileage, but if it does, it's marginal at best. I would think a free flowing exhaust would improve mileage too. A Superchip will help performance and mileage too...at the expense of the chip and super unleaded gas.
