Hi, I need to get a truck used and I am trying to decide what to buy, I bought a 1999 F 150 4 years ago and really like it for the most part. The 4.6 engine is good and the newer redesigned cab over the older version style seemed to be made better. ?'s of all the years F 150's which ones seem to be the best as far as reliable and cheap to keep running and realistically how much weight can you tow with a 150 before you should step up to a 250.
I always bought 250's or 350' but finally grew up and realized unless you are working hard or pulling a 150 is much more economical and rides better plus is cheaper to fix and insure.
Any help would be great, I just do not want to buy a turkey. My brother in law bought a new 6 liter diesel when they first came out and I want a reliable truck not a problem.
I will consider a 7.3 always liked mine but I really like the 4.6 as well, just different strokes. I rented the 5.4 and they ate alot of gas but do pull better so I think the 4.6 is better overall for me?
No one can tell you anything meaningful or with absolute confidence about any model or year within 97 to 03 that would be of any value to you.
They all have one thing or another that needed attention over there life spans.
Good luck.
He'd be wrong in generalizing anything especially that of course he probably wasn't selling a 5.4L either. They had plug issues and cam phaser issues until mid '08, after that they are a lot better. The 3V 4.6L used the exact same head so there is nothing to be gained going with a 4.6L.
Thanks for the help, I have heard from 3 or 4 mechanics who work on these all the time tell me the 4.6 is better than the 5.4. I know the 5.4 pulls way better but I found it sure likes fuel. One guy I talk to today had over 400000 on his 4.6 and never been into it majorly.
I am looking at a 2002 F 150 with a 5.4 extenda cab 4 door. It seems like the people I have asked seem to feel the 97 - 2003 are cheaper to keep going than the newer ones? I am just trying to get a good truck for work and learn.
