c4 transmission help????

Hey all,,

I have a early 80's 302 in my f1 with a T5 trans. I want to swap it for an Auto. my question is,, will a 69 c4 trans bolt right up?

I have found on CL a 69 c4 trans with torque converter and bell housing rebuilt for 300 bucks.

any thoughts would help a lot!!!

As long as your 69 C4 is from a 302, it will bolt up to your later block with no problems. One thing you do need to look out for is to make sure you have the correct flexplate (flywheel) that matches the balance on your engine. In 1981, Ford changed the balance factor from 28oz. to 50 oz. Do not use the flexplate from a 69 302, if it comes with the trans. As long as you have the right parts, you should have no issues.

Hi ,I cant say if it will bolt rite up or not, but it seems like a really good deal. I would be cautious and check the trans, at least pull the pan and look around for debries or any evidence that it isn't what they say it is. The reason I say this is a year ago I got a deal on a rebuilt 1970 c4, it was advertised as never had atf installed. well to make a very long story short when I got the unit it had been blown up and had parts in backwards wich caused me a lot of extra $ and frustration. I hope it is just a good deal and is freshly rebuilt , just be cautious , maybe ask for receipts, old parts etc. Best of luck, PS. you will need the proper size flexplate for the bell housing large or small .

The guy on CL just rebuilt the tranny but swaped it for a c6 .. Has about 3k on it. My 302 is an early 80's block. So it should have the 50 flywheel,, right?

Also is there any numbers or a way to ID the bell housing? He said he has the torque converter too.. How do I tell it's the right one?

Be very cautious when buying used automatic transmissions . The only way you can tell what you are buying is to dismantle it . If the seller is a trusted friend please accept my apologies .

Bell housing: M/T / Converter housing: A/T

C4 converter housing will have an ID number cast on it similar to, or the same as this: D9AP-7976-BA (1979/82).

1982: Last year for 302/C4 combo. 1983/86 302 could have C5, which is a modified C4. 1980 302 could also have C6. 1981/91 302 could also have a C6 or AOD.

C6 & AOD: Converter housing made as part of trans case.

Look on the engine block for a casting number and date code, post what they are. Because of emission requirements, figuring out the correct 302 flexplate may be a b!tch!

Most of the trans ID tags have vanished by now.

One thing to keep in mind is the c4 is a 3 speed transmission, so depending on tire size and rear diff, you may end up running some high RPMs. I'm having a similar issue with my C6 and 351w with a ford 9 3.70. good luck!

I have stock axles for now ( till the pockets fill up ) . But was looking at running a 17" on a lower profile wide rear. I like the hot rod stance ..

You probably should mention that, should he drop it, he should make absolutely NO attempt to catch it.

Inside joke..

There may be some difference in starters too, blockplates may not be the same.

It will bolt up, you need a a 50oz imbalacened flex plate, do NOT use a '69 28oz imbalance flex plate. You have a flywheel in your truck and you need a flex plate so in reality it don't matter if its 50 oz or 28 oz you can't use it with the auto. The starter will work. All modern Ford small blocks use the same rear block bolt configuration (260-351W, 351C and M use the FE bolt pattern)

Do you know...for sure...what year the 302 is from? I don't and it appears that the OP doesn't know either.

What flexplate does a 1980 302/C4 F100/150, Bronco, E100/150 & Ford/Merc Passenger Cars use? E0AZ-6375-A (replaced C5AZ-6375-T) 164T Ring Gear.

Here's a few more applications for this little charmer: 1965/71 Galaxie/LTD 240 I-6/C4 / 1969/74 Econoline 302/C4 / 1969/79 F100 302/C4 / 1973/74 Bronco 302/C4 / 1975/79 F150 302/C4.

1976 Granada/Monarch 302/C4 w/pan fill trans / 1977/78 all Ford/Merc Passenger Cars 302/C4 / 1979 all Ford/Merc Passenger Cars 302/C4 & 302/FMX / 1979 E100/150 302/C4.

But, if it's a 1981/82 302/C4 or a 1981/82 255/C4, the whole equation changes. I've been down this road many times before, why I said in post 7 that it can be a b!tch figuring out which flexplate will be correct!

If the flexplate does not match the harmonic balancer, there will be a vibration that will eventually tear the center from the flexplate. Not pleasant!

IF the balancer is genuine Ford, it will have an Ford ID number stamped on it that crosses over to the Ford part number. Now it's EZ to figure out which flexplate is required.

But many of these balancers have since been replaced with autoparts store parts that don't have an Ford ID number. So, there's no way to determine what their applications are.

Bill,
Your correct and I made a poor assumption that he had something newer that required the 50 oz imbalance. I know better than make assumptions considering he does not know what he has and wants to make a major drive train change based on a cheap price.
