probably a 2x2 or a little less. really they are stake bed holes and on the bigger pickups you could buy some tie down clamps for slide in campers. Only problem is that over the years the truck beds were tinnier and they would tear out quick if used. As I said try a piece of 2x2 and go from there.
these toggles will work, but can loosen. Yes in the corners below the rails there should be tiedown points on the later model trucks. I have a truck box on mine and whit I did was add a pair of the drop down types (fold into the recess) and then bolted them to the side of the box next to the latch. that way I can have a place to tie to if needed when you cannot reach the tiedowns under the box.
