I'm looking at a ranger nearby and just had a few questions.
Its a 94 4.0 4x4 ranger xlt with 277,000 miles! Supposedly was a fleet vehicle for I'm sure most of that before the current owner bought it. The only reason I'm seriously looking at it with those miles is that it is very clean and every thing I checked worked including the auto hubs. The only thing was the alternator has a draw he said that you have to unplug the alternator plug then plug it back in if it sits over night.
Just wondering if there are common things that go wrong or to look for in these when buying.
Kinda sounds like maybe a leaky, or shorted diode in the alternator voltage regulator belongs on your suspect list. Most autoparts stores can/will at no cost, test the vehicles electrical system for excessive parasitic electrical draw, with their portable tester, or bench test the alternator. Let us know what you find.

I should have clarified that he supposedly took it to a mechanic that said that a new alternator would fix it, but since it is for sale he just didn't do it.
Seeing as how its 4x4, you'll want to see if its pvh system works, as its a common problem system. You didn't say if its an auto tranny, if it is, you'll want to make sure it has engine braking in (L) range, if not suspect a blown valve body seal, which is common, but fixable with installation of the TSB bonded gasket repair.
With this many miles on it, Everything is suspect, so try to find out its scheduled maintenance & repair history, so you'll know whats likely still ok & what scheduled maintenance items, or repairs or replacement parts likely need looking after right away.
What's the pvh system? The shift on fly 4x4 and low range both worked when test driven. It's also a manual 4speed w/ od. I will ask about maintenance history, I think he knows the fleet that had it because he was adamant about the oil being changed every 2500mi but otherwise what should be done if no history? Probably timing belt and then maybe wheel bearings/ujoints and stuff like that.
Also he has it for $2500 but with the alternator he said he'd take some off so if I can get it for 2k is that a pretty good deal since everything on it works?

$2000-$2500 seems a fair price for it. Alternators are easy to do yourself for about $120 new, which makes me wonder why he didn't do that himself, and if that really is the problem.
+1 to check the shackles if you're in a rusty climate. Core support and radius arms also rusted through on my '94. The core support was a big job so look for stress cracks above the front body mounts, that would be a deal breaker for me. With that many miles the springs and body bushings are likely due for replacement so try to see if those appear original or not. You might leave the wheel bearings and u-joints in place if there's no play/noise there.
That's my 02cents. Let us know how it comes out. It does look great for the year and especially for the mileage!
