Is anyone running a automatic overdrive with a 302 or 351W? I currently have a C-5 behind my warmed over 351W in my sons 51 F1 but I think it is finally giving it up. I have a low mileage AOD out of a 93 Lincoln mark VIII that I would like to run but not sure on the adapter or electronics needed. Any help or advice would be great.
Thanks in advance.
I'm running a 93 AOD behind my 81 351W and really like it. Hooks to a Ford 9" with 3.89 gears and I have had it to 75 on the highway with no issues. Think I was pulling 2500 RPM at the time. You will need to hook up a TV cable from the transmission to the carb linkage and use a transmission pressure gauge to dial it in so you don't burn up the clutches and it shifts properly. As long as you get the AOD and not the AODE there are no electronics unless you count the neutral safety switch.
Found some good info on the newer electric AOD trans swaps. If you use a trans from an 2001-2002 V 6 mustang it will bolt up to 302/351w w/o an adapter. These tranys are strong and cheap because they are not failing so a low demand helps on the price. Then if you us the "US Shift" computer and harness it is a stand alone system and all you need to get going. I found a used trans with warranty for $250 from LKQ and the "Us Shift" kit is $585. I have the trans on its way in a week or so and will keep you posted on the figment and install.
No adaptor or electronics involved. Best change you could make in my opinion. Lokar has cable to throttle valve.
Well the 4R70W does have electronics but it is a simple set up and allows for shift point changes, tire size imput and lock up programming so it should work out well. I have the same version in my 70 C10 (but the Chevy version) and it is night and day over a regular auto.
Find a good transmission guy and take your AOD and a 4R70W to him and have him put the internals from the 4R70W into the AOD. You end up with a beefier transmission with wider gear ratio and NO electronics. I have a guy here locally that does these for me and it is the hot setup.
BTW - AODs went to AODE (electronic shift control) in 92...if you have a 93 then you probably have the electronic version.

Thats interesting never heard of that good to know if I ever need to rebuild my AOD. Actually 93 is the last yer for the AOD and first year for AODE. They made them both that year.
The one I have now from my other project is the AODE but will not bolt to the 351W in my sons truck so I found a V6 mustang AODE will bolt right to it w/o the need for an adapter and since any "real car guy" is not abound to use a "V6" trans in his hot rod (same trans as V8) and since they are almost bullet proof behind a V6 this leaves a low demand for them giving us a better price.
