I'm tearing down a 351w engine for a rebuild but I'm having trouble getting the crank pulley off. The engine is on the stand right now so there's no bumping the starter or anything. I tried getting it off with some made in Taiwan impact gun that's been in the garage forever with no luck what so ever, it wouldn't even crack loose. I'm not sure of the brand or anything so I went and bought a "mechanics" brand impact gun from Orielly's today but got home and noticed I missed the spec sheet at the store saying it has a max bolt size of 9/16th or something, and 230 max lb ft and 50-200 working lb ft. Will that be enough to pull off the pulley bolt? I don't want to open something up that won't work and be stuck with it when I could just return it and get a different one and I'm wondering if the max bolt size will be an issue. I've used a handful of impacts before and never known that they have a max bolt size so I'm curious.
So what do you guys use for impact guns and compressors? The only compressor I have at the moment is a 4.2 cfm compressor that I can only hold the trigger down for a little while until the gauge drops to 70ish psi.
A 9/16" bolt takes a 13/16" wrench/socket the nuts usually take a 7/8" a little bigger than it sounds
If the gun is a 1/2" drive it should break your pulley bolt loose
250 ft lbs seems a little low for a 1/2" drive impact, I'd be taking it back for something a little more you get what you pay for.
Good luck
