Project Work Horse

Hello All,

I hope its not first post faux paus that i'm starting a build thread.

I figured on account of the powertrain being a 300, that this would be the best place for this to exist.

The chassis is a 94 f150 4wd, LB RC (rust free!). I drove it into a fence once (oops) so it has the front end and hood of off an 89 that i drove for a winter. It has been pulling plow duty (snow) since then.

This truck has the 5 speed with the attached bellhousing and a stick engaged transfer case. Manual warn lockers. 2" blocks in the rear. 4 " skyjacker springs and shocks in front to keep my plow from dropping the frame into the weeds. Rolling on 32" Trail Cutters.

End goal of this truck is to replace our family's 2008 tundra as a work horse.

I will start with the motor this truck is going to receive and then hope that I can get some shared wisdom on the best route to go.

The truck currently has a bone stock 300 with the speed density EFI. The donor motor is out of my 79f100 that I stopped sinking money into a decade ago. The 79 300 specs as follow:

ARP Rod/Crank/Head fasteners.
SpeedPro Forged Pistons .030" over stock
Rotating Assembly Balanced.
Head Ported by a local Speed shop. I have not flowed the head, but will have numbers on it before I put it in.
CompCams bumpstick (will find the cam card for the specs).
CompCams valvetrain to top off the cam.

I plan on blueprinting the motor and machining the CR up to the low 9:1s

In this variant on my f100 it ran through an Offy 4bbl 2plane with a Speed Demon vacSec. Spark via MSD6digital and a Mallory Unilite. Hedman dual longtube ceramic coated headers. It ran pretty strong in that combo, but I moved on to other things when I decided I didn't want to fix all the rust on a 79 (I live in Canada).

So, I plan on taking my built motor and transplanting it into Project Work Horse. Once the tax return shows up there will be parts ordered, so this project will be rolling shortly.

I want to sort out running the beast NA this year, with the plan of fabbing up propper manifolds for an HX35holset or similar next summer. I want 400hp and 700torks to the wheels for pulling the horses and holiday trailer. I will sort out replacing driveline parts as they crater.

Does anyone see any problems swapping the EFI bits over to the 79 longblock? I have not had the two motors side by side, but they look identical from what my eyes have seen under the hood. The carbed head looks like it might need clearencing for the injectors?

Also, I am worried about the speed density running a cammed motor. I know the SD mustangs can have a hard time idling with a cam. I am uncertain the best solution for tuning Project Work Horse. I would like to run a V8 EEC with my TweecerRT and set it for 6 cylinders. I am going to look for a PIP sensor on my dizzy today as I have read that is the issue with using the V8 EEC. Otherwise I am thinking a Megasquirt will be the route.

Thank you all for reading, and your advice/criticism. I hope to learn a lot on this project as the 300 isn't the most documented as far as EFI hot rodding goes (or I'm not looking in the right part of the interweb!)

I recommend an EFI head for EFI applications. A carbed head does not have the required fast burn characteristics for the EFI to run well. There will not be enough spark advance.

Depending on the cam profile it may or not work with the EFI. Too much duration will upset the computer.
