I am going to put a full exhaust system on my 76 F-250 some time in the near future. Being as the old one is rotted out.
I need some advice on which route to go, though.
I would like to put a set of headers on it, and I want dual exhaust out the back.... I know anything is possible, but I dont want to have to custom build an exhaust. I wanna buy a kit and bolt it on.
Also, Im not really equipped to raise the motor, is there a set of headers I can buy where I wont have to? If I cant avoid that, Ill get it done. Ease of installation is what Im looking for. If anyone can reccomend an exhaust system for me, give me an idea about prices and where to purchase it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx
I belive that hedman sells a bolt on kit for the 360 with 4x4 OR 4x2 with their headers.
I remember seeing it in the P.A.W. catalog, but I do not have one or know the part number .
Try looking around in the FE forum https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/f...?s=&forumid=51
To install headers you will most likely have to lift the engine. You will also need to custom fabricate pipes for your vehicle. If you are unable to do this a muffler shop is your only option. Building an exhaust out of bits and pieces of tubing etc never works well.
Does your truck have an auxilary fuel tank? If so then the driver's side exhaust must cross over and run down the passenger side. If not then I've seen some kits for duals. The kits usually list applications pretty specific.
On the 360, before I decided to do it myself I would go out and see if I could remove the top row of bolts on both exhaust manifolds. The way those heads are made the top row of holes are through holes and the bolts tend to rust. The bottom row are usually ok. If you don't have a good method for working with siezed bolts then consider farming the job out.
A couple months ago, I replaced the exhaust on my '73 F100 2wd 390. I bought Dynomax ceramic coated headers (lifetime warranty) from Jegs for $225 and then had a muffler shop run the dual 2 1/4" pipes and glass packs which cost $200. I've been very happy with this setup, nice sound and no leaks - yet. I did have to raise the engine to get the headers in, they are a snug fit but not bad. If you don't have the equipment, have a mechanic or muffler shop install the headers.
If you do decide to go with headers, get a starter heat wrap or heat shield. Headers make the starter very hot and will burn it out if you don't protect it.
