Yesterday (Senior's Day - $2 entrance fee ), the boss and I went to the National Auto Museum in Reno, NV. This is an annual pilgrimage that we take, I could go a couple times a year really. If you haven't been there, do not miss it and put aside at least two, preferably three hours. Here are some pictures I took while there...hope you enjoy.
On the way home, we got a flat...here we are changing the tire...it was a fairly easy job for me !
To bad that's so far away from me. I think it would be cool to take my dad there for fun.
I can tell you, first hand, take your dad. The only trip you will regret with your dad, is the one you didn't take after it is too late. Lots to do and see out here (and I would be happy to guide).
I'd be afraid to drive a car like that today..People would try to steal/recycle it. That seems to be what happens with the copper at our construction sites.
Sad to say I've live in Reno/Sparks here almost 11 yrs and still haven't been to the museum.
Haven't been to this museum yet, but went through Bill Harrah's collection a few times over the years. It's a damn shame what Holiday Inn did to that collection, though I know some cars were kept for the new museum there.
How does the newer one compare? I know it has fewer cars.
That's the kind of place I'm looking for! Thanks for posting that Neal. We're thinking of dragging the 5er up towards Wyoming in July and hoping to fill the itinerary with car (and other offbeat) museums. Anyone able to recommend a book or web site for places like that?
In this area the Blackhawk Museum is pretty awesome, and up Sackatomato way the ex Towe Museum is worth a peek. Always wanted to take the Model T driving lesson there.

There is an AG Museum in Woodland, CA along with the Hays Truck Museum. There is a Basque museum in south of Carson City (maybe Minden or Gardnerville). Off-beat is the Ichtyosaur State Park in Berlin, NV. Couple of neat ghost towns, Bodie, CA (the best I have ever seen) and Goldfield, NV. I'd also try to arrange a tour of one of the huge gold mines on the east side of the state. If you are going across Nevada, go via Highway 50...the lonliest road in America. I know lots of places along that road to see odd stuff.

Pop
The number of cars is less, but still very impressive. The restorations are exceptional (like Harrah's...to the nuts and bolts). The facility is much better than what Harrah had, IMO. Just a great place all-around.

Ah more good stuff! I've heard of Bodie, and usually a second recommendation makes a place a sure bet. Agreed on Hiway 50, we took it east to west Ely to Tahoe a couple years ago, great road. We missed the shoe tree, kinda snuck up on me and I was high-balling it anyway. But the pony express stops and rock writing on the roadside for miles outside of Sand Mountain stand out in my memory. First time I really needed the cold AC mod () was along those hot and hypnotic wide flat valleys. I swear I went across the same valley and climbed the same range on the far side 7 times. If we're going west to east this time, is Great Basin a good place to let the horses rest a couple days?
