Has anyone here installed a gas tank in the rear frame on a 46 or 47. If so what tank did you use? Was it from a production car or did you have one made? I really dont want to use a plastic tank. The write up I saw on using a mustang tank wont work in this year of truck.
thanks Eddie
Eddie, did you ever figure out the tank situation? Why won't it work on the 46-47 trucks? When I checked on my 46 with an early Mustang tank the only thing in the way was the crossmember, which would have to be moved.
hi
I used a rectangular plastic gas tank from overtons, mounted with galvanized straps from home depot with rubber door insulation in between, worked great. then i took a flat sheet steel and made a cover/ skid plate and painted it, looks great, and it is much safer than sitting on top of it in the old design.
The mustang tanks measures 30 inches wide at the top. The shackles on the rear end of my truck only allow 27.5 inches in between. I will have to look for a different tank or possibly cut and modify this tank to clear the shackles.
how about using a 1940 truck gas tank mounted same as a 1940 under the bed and have the gas filled in to the tank thru the rear fender same as the 1940 ? the 1940 gas tank measures 42.5 x 15.25x 10 " will it fit ?
tony,
if the tank is usable, give it a try - the thing you need to design would be the mounting straps to hold it up. my tank was plastic, so I also made a metal box like shield underneath like a skid protector.
you want to make sure it wont bounce around up or down and not scrape metal on metal near the mounting points. also make sure you have reasonable ground clearance.
Mpr,
After seeing your pictures, I ordered a plastic tank off ebay. It is 19 galoons and I will be installing it this next weekend. I am going to build a metal enclosure to hold the tank it. I just hope it doesn't hang down to far. Got my engine installed last weekend and am hoping to fire it up soon. Thanks for your help.
Eddie.
