after starting the truck at times the the starter will engage then disengage we've replaced the starter, silenoid, and ignition switch still does it. any ideas?
Do you mean to say that while the engine is running, the starter will just power up and engage the engine all on it's own?
Yes that's exactly what's happening. The truck will be running, and the starter will re-engage itself and attempt to start the truck again. It sounds just like when you turn the key to start the vehicle when it's already running, except no one is turning the key, it's engaging on it's own.
Sorry for the misspellings in previous post. My husband was on my account
No real history of it. It had never done it before until Sunday 2/10. Went to start it for church and that's when the problem started. It had never happened before.
Replace the starter relay, the return spring inside probably broke. I've attached the starter wiring diagram and the relay location page. The relay is just below the #5 in the top row.

Thanks! I guess that will be today's project. Hopefully I can get it done before the ice storm hits tonight. Really don't like not having my 4 wheel drive in ice.
alloro, I am having same problem, is that the solenoid looking thing on the firewall?
I actually am in the process of replacing all devices in starting circuit, starter, battery cable, battery, ect..
There is no solenoid on the firewall, it's a relay.
Starter relay looks like this:
The solenoid is on top of the starter motor. Even auto parts houses and sellers get it wrong.
I thought that was a solenoid. That has been changed. We have that same one on both Ford trucks so I switched them out thinking that may be the issue. It is doing the same thing with either one in, but the F-150 is not doing it at all regardless of which one is in it. Since we know it's not that, what else could it be??
I had this same problem a few years back. I was inside the house and heard a vehicle trying to start. I went outside and it was MINE. After I cut the battery cable it finally stopped. So I replaced the cable and I found out that the battery had a short and that was the cause of the problem
There is absolutely no way a "battery had a short" could cause this problem. If a battery were indeed shorted, you'd have a whole different set of problems ranging from a dead battery to smoke and fire.
