I bought a 1961 F100 Flareside a month ago. It didn't have a rear bumper or tailgate on it when I got it so I searched the internet for used parts. I found a used bumper and tailgate and just received them today. The tailgate is way too wide. I thought the tailgates were all the same for the flaresides.

tailgate for long bed is wider?
or tailgate for 57-60 styleside is similar but to wide?
post pic someone will id it
I emailed the seller about the tailgate and he said he was sorry the tailgate doesn't fit and he didn't know there were different tailgates either. He also was sorry that he doesn't take returns. It looks like I made another stupid mistake with my money. I should have done more investigation before I bought it. I was just excited to find a decent used tailgate.
The tailgate is 55" wide. I'm not sure if that helps identify it.
does the gate you received have 2 handles on either end of it ?? If it does, thats for the 61-63 Unibody type Styleside.
If the gate has no handles or provisions for them being bolted to the upper outboard area but has 2 odd shaped brackets welded to it with a notch and a hole in it on either top edge of the tailgate, thats the 57-60, 61-66 4WD and 63/64 wrong bed Styleside bed
This gate will have 2 round tubes top and bottom with the F O R D lettering and sheetmetal panel in between it.
If the gate on the upper area has a rounded top edge and has a 2-3" tall/wide area across the top before going inboard to the sheetmetal where the F O R D lettering is and also has odd brackets and a notch and hole on either top end...that could very well be an Econoline tailgate....post a pic of what you have....
So the consensus is that I have a flareside tailgate for an 8' box. I don't know how to tell if it's original or a reproduction. It isn't in perfect condition and that's what I wanted for my truck.
I still need to get the correct one for my truck and hopefully get rid of this one.
