Largest rims to put on Mustang II IFS '54 f100?

So here's my plan... I'm getting a Jim Weimer Mustang II IFS kit with either 2" drop spindles or regular spindles.

Im going to use air ride suspension. Does anybody have any idea of the largest size rim I can put on the front IFS? Can I put 18's in there?

Also will it matter if I get regular or drop spindles? I want a lower ride height, and i'm not sure if the bigger rims will determine which spindles I should get.

Lastly, what size of rear rim should I run? Will 20" fit?

Thanks for all the help in advance, this forum is awesome!

Just a heads up on the drop spindles, I'm only running 15" rims and my clearance is only 8" to the bottom of the front bumper using regular spindles. Now larger tires will give a great clearance but at 8" I worry about coming off rounded curbs and speed bumps hitting....my 2 cents.
Good luck!

Hey Slaney,
Hmmmm... Tricky question on what size wheel you can run.
Our truck is a 1950 F1 with a Mustang II front end with coilovers -
standard axle - not dropped. The Mustang II drops the front end quite a bit - not sure a drop spindle is required.

We've really struggled with the wheel/tire size issue - we initially went with 18's front & back with 255-45-18 tires - 27 inch diameter/10 inch width. That's a pretty low profile tire & it didn't work up front - hit on dips & rubbed (a lot). We put in spring spacers & jacked the coilovers up to the max & it still didn't really work i.e. couldn't be aligned.

I went even smaller on the tire this week & it fits - 225-40-18's - that's a very low profile tire.

There's a lot that needs to be thought through - measure, measure, measure & talk to to some real wheel/tire guys. A lot depends on the Offset so you can tuck them in under the front fenders.

Good luck over there. Our truck's stance with 18's up front (see pic).

Any update on this slaney30?
Im at the stage im looking at wheels for my 54 f100 with mustang II IFS, stanard spindles.
Want to know general consensis.
One issue is, even though i followed the drawings and instruction, measured 4 times, before welding in towers, it seems too far forward. The spindles only are 1” forward of where the original axel was. The wheels i have in there right now (winters off my 09 dakota, so too large) it seems like the wheel should have been 4 inches back.
Im just mocking up fenders as i am just painting them.

This pic is old, and so not all the weight on front end..MII sits with fenders level with top of these tires now, with all but front bumper on.

First mock up a while back<br/>18x235 60s

As Ben said, and you may already have considered, the offset is important. That caught me by surprise, and since new Ford wheels are 35+ offset we had an issue finding wheels. We ended up with a neutral offset wheel that worked.

We had the target of staying with a total 30” wheel/Tire height, and used 17” wheels (8” wide tires) with a taller tire to get there. Front and rear dropped about 4”, and everything works, if that helps.
