Cooling system Maintenance

All, I have searched the archive threads with limited success, for a very comprehensive post on how to drain, flush and recharge the cooling system on the PSD. My 2000 now has 33+K miles and I would like to perform this PM task before the extreme heat is upon us here in New Mexico. Any help or direction will be appreciated. Jeff in NM…OUT

How often does your owner's manual say you are supposed to drain and flush the system? At 33K miles you should only need to add FW-16. The best thing to do is to use coolant test strips to make sure the level of FW-16 is at the proper level (not too high or too low). You can either buy at Ford or an online store like Diesel Injection Service. If you want to completely flush and drain the system, send me an email. I have the service DVD from Ford and will send you all the information. It's too much to post even though it's simple to do.

I do not think Jeff (Skeetshooter) requires the FW16 additive as I would be willing to bet he has the yellow or orange color (whatever it is, it is not green) .

Us guys and gals with the green coolant need the FW16 additive.

put the evans waterless coolant setup in it and never change it again or put additives for 500,00 miles. i am using it and dont have any problems so far. www. evanscoolant.com It works off of a pressureless system. It took 6 gallons to fill it up after complete drain and flush with water.

Motox.... thank you for the very intersting information. I will give the use of this coolant some serious thought.

The 2000's do not have gold coolant, they have green and require FW-16.

Really now???..... Hmmmmm, I thought the 2000's had the orange/gold looking coolant. I remember thinking it would be nice to not have to worry about the additive.

I'll ask around.

Some of the 2002 models still had the green coolant. The gold coolant hasn't been used for that long.

I believe they started using the gold coolant at the beginning of the 2002 model year at the Kentucky Truck Plant. The Econolines, Built in Loraine Ohio still use the green stuff as do the trucks built in Mexico.

The evans coolant is a brown color like a light oil or something. I ran it hard in 100 deg weather this weekend for the first time since changing to it and i stopped at a mini mart off the freeway and decided to check it and have not lost any out the pressureless cap that you have to drill a 1/16 inch hole into so your system becomes pressureless and there is no water to cause cavitation. I am really liking this stuff and i dont have any stains in the tank from it like the regular antifreeze does. Just thought i would post something since i was bored.

I'm glad I found this thread - I just picked up a bottle of FW-16 for my '02 with the gold coolant. The owner's manual says to add every 15k, but it sounds like that is not the case.

Can someone enlighten me on the gold coolant?

i believe the premium gold coolant requires additives every 50,000 miles.
