In the spring I installed an LED for the glow plug relay because it seemed like a easy kinda cheap fun mod to do. Well, just last week I noticed the LED would just flicker for an instant and not stay on. I thought, thats not right. Either the relay is on, or its not. So I popped the hood and checked the relay, and it was intermitant. I would not have known till it was cold out if not for that 5.00 mod. I replaced it with a gpr 109. Interestingly the one I took out was replaced about 6yrs ago and was also a gpr 109, which on the bottom said made in the USA. The new one says chinee. I think I'll get a spare to keep with my growing inventory of "spares".
I think it's a great idea with very little if any undesirable side effects. Makes me wonder why I haven't installed one yet in any of my trucks.....(make note to self to update the SD TO DO list....)
I've been thinking about going one step further and taking control away from the PCM and installing a push button in the cab. That way I can use it when (if ever) the need arises. The only time I really need the GPs is during the mild winters or when I am at high elevations. I figure a 20-30 second burst should be more than enough to get the engine to light.
For me the benefit would be possible longer battery life (only getting 24 months per pair right now...) and would be nice not to have the GPs fire every time I turn on the key to connect up AE or when priming with oil after HPOP or injector work etc...
I have the switch installed already....just need to get off my butt and run some wires.

I've been through a few GPR's in my 97 E350, and the first indication of trouble was always a long crank and cloud of white smoke on a cold morning. An LED in definitely going in the new truck.

If you got it at NAPA it has a 3year 36,000 mile warranty. I use a dash plug in volt meter. Checks batt, checks draw down when GPR comes on, shows when kicks off, show Alt output.
I think it's a great idea and I would've done the LED, but with my Aeroforce scan gauge I can watch actual voltage and see when the GPR is energized. It's a huge difference in voltage; ON vs OFF.
I guess it depends who you are. I am rarely in a place where I need a GPR, and even if I wanted to hook up my GPR LED, I have a GPCM. I've managed with out one for this long lol
