OK, I did try searching, but not quite what's happening to me. As stated, 2001 XLT with power door locks and the keypad. The basic issue when the vehicle is running and the doors have already auto OR manually been locked. I then want to open the passenger door to let someone in, like backing up from a tight parking spot. I can't get any of the doors, even mine, to unlock. Have to manually pull on the door handle.
Here is what I have tried with no success:
--Used manual and auto-lock mode - same issue.
--When car is not running and I am trying to unlock it, keypad works all doors fine.
--Same with remote, double click and all doors unlock or lock as appropriate
--Only way to get something working is to manually open my drivers door, then drivers side master unlock switch works fine on all remaining doors.
Here is what I don't get, the whole point of the electric doors locks is the drivers convenience, but that doesn't appear to work when the car is running.
Thanks for any hints on relays or other settings, is there a secret setting not in the owners manual for this feature?
You've got a lot of extra confusing information listed. Let's see if I've got this right, the only problem you're having is the driver's door switch will not unlock the passenger doors when the engine is running, and other than that one scenario everything works fine? Also, was it always like this or did it just start doing this?
Alloro: You got it - just that one thing. Despite my name - totalrecall - I have to say I have been messing with this so long now - I don't remember if it did it before or not.
You might have to take it to the dealer for them to disable the Power Unlock Inhibit feature.
Here is how it works: With the ignition off, 20 seconds after electrically locked (remote transmitter, keypad, door lock control switch locked with door ajar) and all doors are closed, the door unlock switch will be inhibited if this feature is enabled. (The lock function will still operate.)
Thanks Alloro - that seems to be it. I searched on the internet and found instructions on how to disable and enable the inhibit option, but it didn't work. The instructions were from alldata for a 2002 Explorer, but thought I would give it a try. Couldn't find anything for my 2001 Expedition.
I also appreciate the hint on the word inhibit. Once I realized that's what I was trying to solve, at least I could out searching.
Also looked in the paper shop manuals I have, doesn't talk about the inhibit feature, so it may be a trip to the dealer one day if I want that.

You could try calling the service department to see what advice they might have. For all I know, they do these all the time and charge a small yet modest fee.
No, autolocks is a different feature. Autolocks will automatically lock the doors when you start driving over something like 20 MPH, but you can still unlock them if you so choose. His problem is that the unlock feature is disabled even when not moving.
I don't believe you can with the remote, but on a 98 you should be able to use the door lock button inside to lock them.
I guess I never updated my signature here, I have a 2000 XLT now.
I know I can lock them from the door switch, I'd like to be able to use the remote. I assume there is some sort of inhibiting feature put on that I'd like to bypass or reprogram or something. I use my truck for work and the ability to leave it running and locked, and then unlocking it without having to use a key or going to the driver's door would be a great asset with my job.

You're better off installing a remote start with keyless entry system. The range is 100X better, plus many remote start systems allow you to remove the key and keep the engine running, thus reducing the possibility of someone jacking your ride.

I take it that the engine would stay running until its shifted into gear.

If you mean without the key in the ignition, then someone will never get that far. The ignition has to be turned on to unlock the steering wheel and allow the shifter to move out of park. Plus as alwaysfords41 mentioned, applying the brake to move the shifter out of park would also shutdown the engine.
Once you have the key inserted into the ignition and the ignition turned to on, you can step on the brake and shift out of park. The engine will not shutdown because the key is in the ignition and the ignition is on.
