gear question

Hello i bought a 84 2wd long box. I was wondering how to tell the gear ratio just by looking at the housing. Any codes? Its a 9" rear. I am trying to avoide jacking it up and spinning the tires. Theres a couple numbers on it. I know its a limited slip in it if that narrows it down. Its not thw original rear

There should be a tag under one of the bolts that hold the front of the pumpkin. If you think it's the original rearend, there is also a code on the sticker located in the driver's door jamb that will tell you what the ratio is.

It will have numbers on it, depending on what your ratio is. If you see a "50" it's probably a 3.50 ratio, since they usually poke the bolt hole through the "3".

Those numbers don't make sense to me. They didn't put 9 inch rearends in f250/350 and I don't think they had a f150 camper special. If it was a limited slip, it will have a "L" on the tag somewhere also.

Probably an 8.8 axle - introduced in 83, alongside the 9".
I don't know about the 1279

If it's not the original gear set in there, the only real way to find out is pull the center. There's a 4 digit code on the ring gear, divide the two last numbers by the first two to get your ratio. If there's no code, count ring and pinion teeth and divide to get the ratio.

Example: 1339 will be 3.00 gears (13 pinion teeth and 39 ring gear teeth)

You can get close by jacking up the back and counting revs of tire and pinion. Not all that accurate though.

its not an 8.8 because i can see the 3rd member. it doesnt look anywhere near the axle in my 93. ill have to try and find out the manual way by counting the rotations of tires to driveshaft
