Depends a lot on actual overall condition and your location. Value varies according to location. Check it all out and don't rely on what the seller says. As for the 78k miles, that may or may not be right. Could be 178k or even higher. If the interior hasn't been redone it could give you an indication as to whether it is or isn't 78k miles. Pics would help a lot. But when all is said and done, if it's worth it to you then it's a good buy.
I agree with kedwinh. probably more like 178,000 miles, or maybe even 278,000 miles. My 86 model had 137K when I started my resto-mod and it wasn't driven that much for many years. Definitely, the condition of the interior may provide clues as to the which number is correct for the mileage. Depending on the mileage, engine condition could be a concern. A good going over is in order before dropping that kind of money on the truck, but if its in good condition and the engine is in reasonable shape, $3k may be reasonable. But again, it depends on what it's worth to you.
Like 86Ford said, that motor could be as much as 278K miles or more depending on if the odometer rolled over. If properly taken care of, the six WILL last that long. Neat little motors.
If the paint is good, hardly any rust, great running motor with not much blow-by and hardly any problems (if any problems present, let them be little), I'd give $2500 or $2750 for that truck.
I don't know about your location, but you'd be hard pressed to find an old Ford 300 with a 4-speed and 4x4 around here for sale. The price paid for my truck was a little higher than it should have been, but people don't want to let go of the Ford straight-6 4x4's... As you can imagine, this does bump the price up a hair. If it's in as good as condition as you say, offer $2500 and see if he'll let it go for that. If not that, you can probably get it for $2800.

Thanks for the replies guys. The paint looks good in the pics and I'm going to look at it hopefully tomorrow. I've got him to $2500 plus a Benelli Nova that I don't use. If the interior is as nice as exterior I will offer $2k and give $2250. Hope to be around on the forum with a truck.
On a side note, I've held Benelli Nova's before and a few other Benelli shotguns. Really nice handling guns that feel really well.
I just can't let go of my Mossberg 500 though. The slug barrel with sabots gives me 1 1/2'' groups at 100 yards and the smooth bore barrel will handle anything else I use it for. If I can't do the job with those, I've got a 30-30 with a receiver mounted aperture sight or a single shot 26'' barreled 25-06 that can reach out to 400 yards.
I just never did like the Nova. Bought it for a duck gun. It just can't hold a candle to my 835 Ulti-Mag. That big 10ga. barrel just patterns so well that I retired my trusty 870, which I thought I'd never do.
Got it for $2250. It could have 178,00 but I would not be surprised if it's only 78,000. Paint isn't as good as I thought but body is straight and cancer free. Was planning on painting anyway. Pics Fri. night.
