First Truck, Project Truck

So for a little background Im 15 and Ive worked since i was 12 to buy a red 86 F150 crew cab XLT Lariat from my grandpa. It has the 351 Windsor, but wont start without ether even though the carb was rebuilt about 4 years ago.

Does anybody have any clue on why? Fuel pump is new, lines are clean, not sure what else because im not exactly a professsional.

Also, this may be just a fantasy, but any chance if i got a 4wd from the junkyard i could install its suspension, driveline, transfer case, etc. in my truck for a 4wd conversion? Not a biggie, just a wish i had.

Let me be the first to welcome you to the forum.
Just one question about the gas... Is is any good?
And, Yes you can get the parts from a JY and convert your truck to a 4wd. There are several people on here that either have done or are doing that very thing.
Oh, and we love pictures around here.

Welcome to FTE.

About the non-start-unless-fed-ether... remove the air cleaner assembly, look down the throat of the carb as you fully open the throttle with your hand and see if there are two strong streams of gasoline being injected in.

Oh, BTW, go HERE and finish filling out your Profile so we can see where you're at when you post, OK? Thanks.

Not sure how I missed this thread, but welcome aboard man! I was only a couple years younger than you when I was going through the same ropes.

Also, appreciate seeing a kid willing work.

No cranking. Basically there is supposed to be fuel in the carb that gets released when it cranks. So with everything off, look down the carb and move the throttle (the bottom butterfly, not the top) open and you will be able to see the fuel squirt out.

When you crank the engine, does fuel get to the carburetor? How long has the truck been sitting? Some fuels nowadays will start breaking down in a couple weeks, always good to have fresh gas.

You probably put in your state location when you registered, but it doesn't show up unless you edit your profile with the USER CP. Where are you located? There's plenty of us here that love to help each other out. If you're near me I can give you a hand one night this week, or this weekend. Whatever you do, don't get frustrated with it. We'll have you rolling in style on the first day of school

PS- Show us some pictures! An 86 XLT, purchased by an older guy, might be a well optioned truck.

What I'm looking to see is if the accelerator pump will squirt two streams of gasoline into the plenum when the throttle pedal is floored (by hand). No cranking of the engine, engine not running.
Dave, man, you're gonna confuse the kid! Pour out?

This test really just tells us if there's gas at the carb and if it's being squirted into the engine, that's really all. Your problem sounds like a fuel-delivery issue, and this is just one step in diagnosing it.

'86-
Chris is right again. Poor word choice on my part. The fuel squirts like someone is blowing out of one of those caprisun drink straws from elementary school.

This was the best video I could find of it.

Alright so i didn't have a chance to go over today, had some yard work. I'll go over tomorrow and post some pics.

Edit: Added some pics to my garage, but im not sure how to upload pics from my pc to this post. Couldnt test the accelerator pump because of a wasps nest the size of a baseball. Ill take care of that in the morning so i can kill em all.

First of, I'd like to thank you all for being so helpful, and I apologize for not posting, but as I'm 15 school and FFA had to come first. Right now were cleaning out the barn so I can hopefully bring my truck over and start working on it. Again I'm extremely sorry starting this thread then not coming back.
