I just got back from a trip, 1000 miles total with 500 miles pulling an 18K trailer. This was my first trip pulling a trailer with my new DP-Tuner. I must say I am impressed with the power. I had a trip a couple weeks ago without the chip pulling 16k and 18k trailers for 2500 miles, that was pretty slow going. BIG DIFFERENCE in power!!
One thing though, I think I sprung an exhaust leak as it has an exhaust "tick" when under power. I started noticing it about 150 miles into the trip with the loaded trailer. I couldn't get the EGT's to stay down very well. Before the leak I could keep it under 1300 pretty easy in OD as long as I kept the revs/boost up. When I started noticing the leak I could barely keep the EGT's under 1300 when I was in 4th. I haven't had time to really look for the leak yet, nothing visible up top though.
Also since I put the chip in I have noticed I can't give it much throttle and it is blowing black smoke, not a cummins amount (big black cloud) but much more than I expected (steady stream when under power). I noticed this even before I took this trip. Does that seem normal with a chip?
Also my truck is very sensitive with EGT's and altitude. This trip I went from 4000 ft up to 7000 ft and back down. The EGT's were much harder to keep down the higher the elevation I was. Also normal with the chip?
Everything you say sounds normal pulling a heavy load like that except the part where your in OD and you keep the R's up. How do you do that? When I'm climbing a good hill with my 16K 5er I usually drop it into 3rd to keep the R's up and EGT's down. Anyway, the chip will produce a lot of black smoke, I've had several reburns and still smokes. I asked once to cut back on the smoke and lost a lot of power so told them to kick it back up.
Thanks Glenn, It defiantly runs good just wondered about the smoke. It also kept the EGT's down better by using the 80hp tow tune rather than the others which seems backwards.
If I kept my revs up above 2500 rpms in 5th the EGTs would go to 1250-1300 and hold pretty well also my boost was around 17 psi. If I was below 2500 starting the hill the EGT's would shoot well above 1300. I would end up pulling that hill in 4th or sometimes 3rd. I have 4.10s tho, so that helps me keep my revs up. Stock tuning, I ran out of power at about 2600 rpms, its nice having power above 3k now!
I was pulling a 35ft gooseneck with 2 hummers on board, not as much wind resistance compared to your 5er.
My probe is mounted in the manifold. On some of the steepest mountain grades I'm down to 40-45mph, 2nd gear, 3K rpm's and EGT's at 1250* with black smoke coming out inbetween a haze and pouring out black, if that describtion makes any sense.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks
Yes and Yes.
Sounds like you had a great experience and had a lot of fun.
Leaks make for no fun though, I have one myself and my EGT's are screwy too.
You'll have to check along the firewall for the downpipe and check the up pipes for any leaks as well. Mines in the up-pipe.
Ya I had a blast on the trip. Hopefully I will get some time here in the next few days to find the leak. I'm thinking its the manifold to up-pipe connection on the drivers side just based off the sound. I know its not a horrible leak cuz the boost and power is still there.
I've read before that high EGT's can cause the rear exhuast manifold bolts to overheat and break of the heads of the bolts. I pull a 16k 5er and lost the head of the last bolt on the passenger side exhaust manifold. I am getting an exhaust leak under load. I just bought a "left" handed drill bit and HOPE to drill the sucker out.
Well ouch$$$! I just ordered the bellowed up-pipes, pedestal delete kit, EBPV delete housing, and a turbo rebuild kit, plus a few other things, all from RiffRaff. I figured I might as well take it all apart once instead of several times. That stuff sure is expensive though!
Think I can cure my leak now.....but how to hide it from the wife....
Good luck with that! I try to be outside when the UPS man shows up so she doesn't see.
Does that work Glenn? LOL!! The UPS guy usually comes when I'm at work. My wife always asks them " What is it ?" and they say " Looks like something to do with diesel parts by the name of the shipper". So I'm caught before I get home! LOL!!
Chris, that sure is a nice looking CC! I think deleting the EBPV and bellowed up pipes are always a great idea! If you don't mind me asking, how much was the turbo rebuild kit and where did you get it?
Thanks Bill! That's usually what happens to me, UPS shows up and I'm never home. I get home later, the box is already inside and the wife starts asking questions......busted!! Thanks Ronnie, yep $96 from RiffRaff, figured it was a pretty good deal. I don't plan on going over stage 1s so the stock turbo will suit me fine.
