'91 F700 429 is done! What would it take to run a 460?

One of my employees ran the truck for a week without checking oil/ water levels and blew the motor. I knew I had a leaking head gasket problem as water was disappearing regularly, power was down a bit and was just waiting for it to go. Pulled the block yesterday and found cylinders 7&8 completely toasted.

This block is not rebuild-able, heads are toast. With this thing having factory fuel injection would it be possible to put a 460 in its place? I have searched for a few hours now and did find mention of the crankshaft needing to be a certain type so it will bolt up to the Allison transmission.

My concern is the stroke on the 460 being longer than the 429 and how that would effect the timing issues for the fuel injection.....might be a stupid question...what would I need to do in order to swap? Should I go with aftermarket f.i. or carb?

Help!

Just put a 429 in there.. All the headache of trying to convert a car engine to a truck is not worth the few hundred dollars it saves.

If you're going to do any converting atleast convert it to the proper fuel.. Diesel.

passenger car / truck 385 series engines have the wrong crank snout, so the harmonic ballancer cant be changed, which makes it hard to spin all the accessory pulleys that you need for the power brakes, and smog pumps etc.. Im not sure if the output patern is the same for the flex plate, but would asume its different since it's a different crank. The timing chain housing is also different. Its cast iron instead of aluminum for the engine mount. Theres are also a couple other small things that would easily swap over, like the dual thermostats, oil pan..

The Main problem is the crank snout not being the same for the pulleys.. The rest could be pretty easily converted. But, 460's are dogs just like 429's so whats to gain?

Find a 5.9 if you want a project. At least if you are successful you have something to gain.

Thanks for the advice, going diesel.........not going to happen due to CA's D.O.O.R.S / C.A.R.B programs I have too many vehicles in my fleet to avoid the whole system.

Been trying to locate a 429 truck engine, found a few with different head casting numbers so I have to do some research on those for the fuel injection part of it. I really can't believe how long that thing ran and was still running when I pulled it out.

WHY DO YOU SAY THE BLOCK IS NOT REBUILDABLE ?
THE PISTONS ARE TOASTED , IS THE BLOCK CRACKED ?
THE CYLINDERS CAN BE BORED OR EVEN A SLEEVE PUT IN THEM !
HEADS CAN BE FOUND AS THERE SHOULD BE MANY OF THOSE ENGINES AROUND THE COUNTRY !

Look closer at the wall between the 2 cylinders....

Not something I want to put a "Band-Aid" on in a truck that works 5-7 days a week.

Yeah it really is amazing that it ran, and worked..

I guess that's one good thing about having spark plugs.. Compression is optional.

My idea, dont put a 460 in there even if you make it go in, I sure it will ping itself to
death going that route is as bad as going 351-400 moose engine. As far as gas fuel
injection I dont want any part of that. Diesel $100 doesnt even move the fuel gauge.
Diesels blow up too if theres no oil in it. Im so glad my trucks run 391HDs.

I second the emotion of putting a 429 back in there...

Pretty sure that's what I'm going to do. Been searching for an "identical" long block so I can get this thing on the road quick. Anyone have any suggestions for retailers?

Well, finally got the new 429 in, working out some egr codes, less than 20 miles on it and she spun the #6 connecting rod bearing! Yes, was running break in oil. Pretty sure they weren"t torqued right but who knows. Pulled it back out, put on a pallet and on its way back to Washington.

True that! Unfortunately with the original block in the condition it was in my local guy didn't want to touch it. S&J is taking care of me on this but still sucks I have to go through it all over again.
