Hello, I've checked through the threads and haven't found anything specific to this problem. We have a 2002 Excursion, 7.3 with 191,000 miles. My wife just had the tires rotated and balanced. The tires have about 8,000 miles and are good Michelins. I drove the X last night for the first time since balancing and noticed a slight vibration and humming noise that feels like its coming from the front end. Kinda sounds like its in 4 wheel drive. It happens at all speeds and even when the transmission is in nuetral and we're coasting. The vibration goes away when we curve right and gets a little worse when we go around a left curve (or vice versa). The hubs are unlocked (auto) and the inside indicator points to 2wd. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I would also suspect the tires first for two reasons.
I've had a similar issue with the tires on my F-250 after rotating them. My alignment was a little off and I had some uneven wear. After rotating the tires I had a vibration that drove me batty untill I finally drove them even again. That took about 5-6K miles.
With your Excursion this was the only thing you noted that was done to the vehicle since the vibration started.
If you are planning to take the tires off you might want to check the brake calipers. This is also a common but not as well known cause of vibration. There was just a threade posted about this recently.......I'll try to find it.
Thank you for the info! I will move forward on the rebalancing. I was told by another that it may be a unit bearing? If so, is this easy or hard repair? Thank you.
4WD. I found Timken online for roughly the price you stated. Sure enough, I jacked up the truck and the passenger side pops and snaps when the wheel is rotated. Almost sounds like something is in the tire. How long do you think it can be driven before the wheel falls off? Thank you.
Decided to change out the hubs with Warn manuals. Do i need to remove and discard the snap ring and washers in the hub and use the ones provided by Warn? Thank you.
