Bought it this past spring and it work fine. I have not had to use it until yesterday when I had to drive into a soft field. Left in park turned dash panel switch, Nothing in any of the position. Put in neutral same thing Nothing! No 4x4 light on the dash, and it did not engage.
What could be the issue? A fuse maybe. Please help thanks.

i had the same thing happen to me . by chance i replaced my starter motor. cleaned up the ground and pos. the 4x4 switch started to work . clean your grounds
Is there a way to check to see if it is the shift motor before I pull it and buy a new one?
I just don't have the money right now to be replacing a lot of parts to find the bad one. Thanks

Did you check the 30A maxi-fuse (#104?) in the PDB (Power Distribution Box) under the hood?
Just an FYI, but to shift into 4L the vehicle needs to be stopped, the gearshift in N (Neutral), and the brake pedal depressed before you move the selector switch to 4L.

Hope that helps
I check the fuse's under the hood all looked good. Do not have the Owners manual so I looked on line and found what looks like mine. But the 30 amp fuse is # 17
Your correct - my bad, I was looking at a 2000 owners manual.
Your 1998 has a four postion selector switch?
Do you have 12 volts at the input side of the #17 fuse recepticle? (It should be hot at all times.)
Do you hear the transfer case relays click when you shift the selector switch between the 4-wheel-drive positions and A4WD/2WD? (Those relays are up under the dash, sort of above and behind the radio. They are used by the GEM to control which direction the Transfer Case Shift Motor rotates.)
If the relays arn't getting activated, might want to check the selector switch to see if it is has the correct resistance in each position.
2H ~3.7k ohms
A4WD ~1.5k ohms
4H ~680 ohms
4L ~ 240 ohms

With the vehicle in parked, shift the four wheel drive selector switch to "4H" and then tap the transfer case motor with a hammer and see if it engages.
I've been on the boards for a few years now and I've read about the transfer case motor being the source of problems for a few people. On a side note, I generally check my 4x4 system in the yard starting in October before the weather turns bad here in Illinois to ensure everything works and you land up in a situation where you might need power to the front wheels.
