Like the title states, my 85 F-150 EFI 302 fired up, ran great for about 10 seconds, then just shut down. First thing i did was pull the spark plugs, they are BRAND NEW, 22 miles on them to be exact. They looked great still, put a couple on the headers and had the ole lade crank it over, they sparked up pretty decent.
So i stuck the plugs back in, still wont fire up, so i put a little gas down the intake, no change. just cranks away.
Heres what ive done
Confirmed i do have spark
changed my fuel filter (which was SUPER clean anyways)
dumped gas down the intake
put my multi meter on the injector wire of the #5 cylinder, had no voltage.
fuel pump is running, pumping up in about 1.5 seconds, and shuts down.
little back story. Truck sat for 4 years with a bad trans, swapped out the trans, i drove around the city for the last 2 days, like i said, 22 miles, with no issues. Fired it up tongiht, and i get 10 seconds and she shuts down.
it felt like it ran out of fuel, but it did it rather quickly, like the injectors just shut down. tomorrow i will try some ether in it, to see if i can get a sputter.
I still have cab power. Fuses are all good. everything works, starter, lights, radio. everything except the motor wont fire up.
I guess im wondering what tells the injectors to fire? is there a pickup sensor somewhere telling them to fire off? I noticed a distributor sensor that looked like it might be a pickup, similar to that on an old HEI system, but it ran into the harness, so it could be running either the coil or the injectors?
Doing some research I've come up with a possible problem.
Ive got no voltage with key on to my injectors. So i did some research on the 5.0 forums and found that the injectors are hot all the time with the key, and the ground is actually what pulses.
my question to you guys is, does anyone know what drives the +12 to the injectors? Must be some for of injector relay, I keep getting a "eec relay" hit when i search for this topic. Does anyone know exactly where the EEC relay is? I cant seem to locate that via the google machine. If i can find that, then i guess ill have another step to go on.
should also note with those readings as well, its probably about 33* F outside right now, i dont think you can get a good ACT or ECT read below about 55*, correct?
went out to do a re-test. cranked on it for a few, then tested...still got the 21 and the 24, but also found a 14 in there this time which is
"Two or more successive erratic Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) pulses occurred, resulting in a possible engine miss or stall."
Ingition pickup might be pooping eh?
Pulled my dizzy out, damn thing was TOUGH to turn by hand, so i took it down to the parts store and replaced the entire thing. Still no fire though.
After rechecking my injectors i found a constant 12 volts on them, so looks like i am getting power now. i pulled the plugs out again, they are damp with fuel, rechecked spark, i have spark. anyone have any ideas?
