1989 f-250, Transmission

Hello Everyone,

I just bought an '89 f-250, ext cab, 8ft. It has a manual 4 speed with OD, I think its an E40D is that correct? Any suggestions on how to find out exactly what transmission I have?

The reason I am asking is because I am have some shifting issues. It is a little rough through 1st and 2nd gears... and a little rough overall. I am thinking about changing the tranny fluid (look pretty simple)... see if that helps a little. I called about getting it rebuilt... they want $1700... Any cheaper options?

When you said Manual you meant Auto ?? If this is correct, it has the OD button ? It is most likely a E40D. Its fully electronic if that's the case. Have you tried to pull codes?

I think you meant to say you have an automatic 4 speed with OD.

But to my knowledge, the E4OD wasn't available in pickups until 1990.

The E4OD usually costs about $3k to rebuild. If someone is telling you $1700 then they're either doing it for less than cost or doing a half-assed job.

No, it is definitely a manual transmission. It have 1, 2 ,3 ,4 gears as foward gears, PLUS OD... and then obviously reverse.

Ok, then you have a FIVE speed with overdrive.

It's probably the ZF 5-speed. $1700 is a much more realistic figure but I would still shop around as it might be a bit high.

However, if you have a light duty F-250 and you have a 302 under the hood then it's the weaker Mazda 5-speed. What's the GVWR on the door jamb sticker?

If its not an automatic then its not a e40d ... So when you say shifts rough you mean hard to place the stick in gear ? Grinds as in bad syncros? Cluch out of adjustment ? I dont know pick up-manuals only big rigs. so I cant help here..

GVW I believe was like 8600/8800 something like that... its a 5.8L.

My apologizes, I thought overdrive was not considered a "gear". Still learning.

Shifts hard, clutch seems to be fine, a little hard to get into gears sometimes (mostly 1st and 2nd). If I got from like reverse back into 1st, it kinda "bangs" and "drops".

This sounds like internal damage to me.

If it's got the original fluid in it, you would be surprised how that affects shifting. Replace it with a good quality synthetic and it might just feel like a new transmission again.

It takes ATF and not gear oil, too.

What do you mean exactly by internal damage?

Also, so I looked up that transmission you said. I am assuming I have a "ZF S5-42, 4X4"?

I wouldn't assume that until you remove the magnetic drain plug. If it has debris on it then you should worry. If not, just change the fluid.

Correct.
So I read the manual... it said drain the old fluid. Recap. Removed fill plug, and fill til it barely starts to bleed back out. Recap. Correct?

So you're saying when I remove the drain plug is I see metal shavings, dirt, grimes, etc... or just metal? I should worry.

Do you know how much ATF I should get? Recomend a brand? Should I use protectant too?

Lastly, should I just drive her til the tranny dies? Or should I repair it sooner?
