288xxx 351W performance questions

I have a 351W in a 96' Ford Bronco xlt. Right now i have a throttle body spacer, single cat super 44 exhaust (not full, stops before rear axle) and K&N air filter on it giving me 12.6 mpgs with mmy foot in the gas alot

Ive been told that headers will also give me better mpgs/hp... but does my motor have too many miles on it that will cause the headers to lower my back pressure and mess something up?

Also, what will running mid grade or premium do for my motor?

Don't worry about back pressue , the problem you have now is the restictive stock manifolds and exhaust , a good set of 1 1/2 primary long tube headers with a good exhaust , you will get a good gain in HP and TQ ...i don't think running premium will do much good unless your motor is tuned for it , also a timing bump up to 12-14 BTDC will help some.....Lew

Ive been told though that my year truck, if it doesnt have enough back pressure it will cause issues in the motor and will have a harder time starting. is that true?

Well i was thinking running mid grade would clean out a little of the carbon from the unleaded stuff.

How do i bump up my timing without having the computer go haywire?

a good tune up running motorcraft or autolite copper plugs, ford 9mm wires and a good quality cap/rotor. If you run long tube headers make sure to get the o2 sensors as close as you can to there current locations.

you might consider pulling codes just to see whats going on. I am not familiar on how to change the timing on a 96 since its OBD-II efi.

curious what size tires are you running?

The hedmans will work fine , i use them on my truck , nice fit , the headers will help not hurt , just bump up the base timing with the spout out...

lew52 granted those long tubes work well on your lightning but being that he is running a bronco could there be more interference due to the front driveshaft and such?

Shortie headers are a good upgrade also over stock manifolds but obviously not the gains long tubes will give you but honestly with that many miles on the motor i dont know if you would notice much difference between the 2.

Im currently running 33x12.5x15 with everything in the drivetrain stock.

I have 2 of 3 O2 sensors in my exhaust right now (3rd one is zip tied to 4x4 shifter under the truck).

Trying to get all 3 working and in the exhaust system but the 2 old ones dont want to come out of the pipes, if i get headers i will get the ones with the O2 mounts in them.

I think i have auto lite double platinum plugs with stock wires and stock cap/rotor.

Well, I have never heard such BS im life! To reduce the backpressure to that level you would have to run "zoomies" (stright pipes off the heads like in the old days of the 60's dragsters!

You wil have to adjust the fuel mixture & ignition timing but it will run great and likely give you 1-2 mpg more.

That makes no difference timing is done the same.. pull the spout and rotate the distributor.

So.. has the speedo been recalibrated for those tires? If not you're actually doing better than 12.6mpg. HOW TO RECALIBRATE THE SPEEDOMETER ON 92-96 FORD F-SERIES AND BRONCO .: Articles

Backpressure is a myth.. engines don't need it. And an EFI motor won't be damaged by reducing backpressure because the computer re-adjusts the air/fuel mixture hundreds of times a second with feedback from the main(front) O2 sensors, so you can do anything you want to the exhaust system as long as the O2's are installed and connected.

go to an exhaust shop and have them weld in an o2 sensor bung after the cat. the other front 2 sensors should be just after the collector flange on the Y pipe.

not having that 3rd o2 sensor hooked up could also be part of your mpg issue.
