I have a 1989 F-150, and I need a new AC Compressor. I'm sure that I need more parts as well, and I'm looking for a reputable source.
I have had this replaced with "new" units twice, and feel that I've been shafted by my mechanic, and want to purchase the heaviest duty parts available to keep my Truck cool for years to come.
Specifics on the truck are:
1989 F-150 XL 4x4 Extended Cab
5.0 Liter Fuel Injected 8 cyl
It's a nice body, with dual tanks and runs well, but I need to get the AC back in business, it get's warm in GA in the summer...
Get a warranted part from a big national parts chain, like NAPA, CarQuest, All-Pro, O'Reilly, or Advance. There are specific things you have to do & buy when you install it to validate the warranty, so be sure you follow all the instructions to the letter. If you haven't converted to R-134a yet, do it.
Where can I get a good guide on upgrading to the new refrigerant, and how to install all of this new AC stuff myself? I haven't turned a wrench in about 10 years, and I've never worked on AC systems...
What troubleshooting methods should I go through to determine which parts I will need to replace? Is there a normal "set" of parts that "should" be replaced when doing this?
I'm working on OCRing the MACS test manual, which covers a lot of that, even though it's not specifically written as a service manual. When it's done, I'll probably put it up on http://www.broncodata.com/ with some of my other OCRs. If you want the rough version right now, e-mail me (not PM) but be ready for a big file.
Heres a good place to start i ve used this site more than once http://www.aircondition.com/ between this site and the links you can make a sound decision whether you want to do this your self.
also the boys at haynes put out a A/C manuel for about 13 -14 bucks you can pick up at most auto zones or your favorite parts store. if you deside to take this project on be sure to replace all your o-rings throughout and the dryer cartrige / accumulator at a minumum and of course that compressor you are looking for.
when you get it all together, vacuumed down and ready to charge put a can of MAXI-COOL booster in fiirst and then charge it with 134A it will conition the sytem and puts a better kick in to the newer freon very safe, and legal to add to a 134 system.
