We have a 2001 F250 7.3L that has about 334,000 on it. Bought it at 300,000, and from a diesel service shop, truck was running great and still for the most part is. It looks like the intake side of the turbo was replaced but not the exhaust side, or at least a new case was installed on that side. What we have going on now is that it idles very rough when first started, and will attempt to die. After driving a few blocks and flooring it for about 1/2 mile, it seems to do better, but still not great. Also fuel mileage is down around 12 MPG.
Aside from oil changes and air filter cleanings is there any more I can do for this truck? Should I change to glow plugs, relay, or anything like that?
I will provide any additional information and if a picture of the turbo would be helpful, I will get that as well. Thanks!
A turbo generally cannot make an engine run rough, but depending on the failure mode will usually just result in a lack of power.
The glow plugs are only there to start the engine when cold, and unless the temps are below 50 F where you are, are not a factor in your concern.
There are a variety of tests that need to be done on your truck, but just generally speaking given the miles you have and the very limited information you provided, my first inclination would be to suspect that the injectors are worn and are producing a poor pattern. Fuel atomization is critical on a cold diesel, and becomes somewhat less important as the engine warms. The symptom you describe, poor/rough running cold which improves as the engine warms up, is very typical of an engine with worn injectors.
Again, this is just a guess based on your information. You need to get your truck to a competent diesel tech for a thorough going-over.
You need to get the codes read and let us know what they are. If there was someone close to with a AE, they could do a few test to see what is going on with the injectors.
I would think the injectors may be getting week or the UVCH may be loose and not getting a good connection. Make sure none of the wires going across the VC are chafed and grounding out.
Sorry for asking, but I'm not familiar with the short hand, such as UVCH and the VC. Also, I realized I have never changed the fuel filter, how much of an effect would this have?

Changed the fuel filter, little effect, seems to start better.
Still wanting to die in reverse, but it just came back from a transmission shop who checked out the transmission, and torque converter.
It is reading 2 codes from the programmer, P1249 and P1211. The program is set to extreme, should I back it down?
Right, what to do about those? Been reading on the forum that the P1211 is not a major concern, and that the P1249 can be a variety of things from the solenoid to simple vacuum tubing. Any suggestions?
