I don't know why this causes so many fights. The CDL will have a restriction if you don't pass or don't test for airbrakes according to the CA DMV site. You can get a non-comercial class A or B and test for airbrakes on that also, mainly for large motorhomes if I'm reading it correctly.
Each person considering a CDL will research and learn the specifics of their licensing process. Best I can tell the process is only slightly different state-by-state as the CDL is a Federal thing, and because the states have more closely aligned themselves in recent years.
Where did you hear that crete? Whoever told you that was incorrect. Of course there are ways around the air brake endorsement. Farm equipment, RV.. etc etc.
In washington state you have to take a test to drive a vehicle with air brakes.
This is also because any vehicle with air brakes will have a gvwr over 26K, and you need a cdl to drive a vehicle over 26000
You DO NOT need a CDL with air brake endorsement to operate a vehicle registered and operating under 26,001lbs. There is no "L" restriction on a commercial vehicle 26,001lbs and less. You would have to have a CDL only if that vehicle was engaged in hazmat transfer. Also not every air brake vehicle is over 26k International rates most of there 4700 series for 25,999 while ford and the rest of the class 6 trucks are 26,000
If you have to get a CDL and have never had one before then you are REQUIRED to take your driving test in the vehicle you need the CDL for. If said vehicle has air brakes then you WILL take the air brake test, period. To follow up on what Mike said not all trucks over 26001# have air brakes.
As far as factory weight ratings go the ONLY time they mean doodly squat is if you are at the dealership to get warrenty work done. I can go to the Tax Comission and tag a Volkswagon for 90,000# if I want to. The state will be more than happy to take my money and does not care if I squash the wheels of the VW. As long as I can legally scale ( and THAT is a whole other can of worms ) the gross weight of the vehicle I'm driving that is all the state cares about, period. P.S. It's all about the money. Tom
so the test that you take for air brakes is for what reason ? endorsement or restriction , if you drive a truck and i am talking about semis and super 18 , 16 wheel dumps and such , with a restriction for air brakes it will get you a ticket and a fine ! i know from personal experience many years ago ,
this is in az
1.1 – Commercial Driver License
Tests
1.1.1 – Knowledge Tests
You will have to take one or more knowledge tests, depending
on what class of license and what endorsements you need.
The CDL knowledge tests include:
• The general knowledge test, taken by all applicants.
• The passenger transport test, taken by all bus driver
applicants.
• The air brakes test, which you must take if your vehicle
has air brakes, including air over hydraulic brakes.
