'93 F250 Transmission/Dash Cluster Problems

Hello All, I just found this forum and I'm hoping to get some advice/answers. I have a 1993 F250 7.3L diesel 4x4. My father in law bought it in '93 or '94 when it had 1100 miles on it and has had it until he gave it to me about a year ago. He told me the transmission was slipping in it so he stopped driving it and it set for about a year. Well the transmission doesn't seem to be slipping to me but it shifts really hard from 1st to 2nd gear. If you get in the throttle pretty heavy it shifts REALLY hard from 1st to 2nd! It seems to shift fine from 2nd to 3rd. It also doesn't seem to have the power that a truck like this should have. Pulling a trailer with two commercial mowers will bog it down on the interstate. The engine runs strong, holds good oil pressure, and doesn't seem to have any problems at all so would the lack of power be from the transmission? I don't know how many miles it has on it because the odometer, speedometer, and tachometer don't work. Also the gear shift indicator doesn't move when you move from park to reverse, drive, ect. I guess the linkage is broken. I have been told that the speedometer and tachometer not working is probably what is causing my transmission problems? If that is so would that cause the lack of power? What would be causing the speedo, tacho, and odometer to not work? All of the other dash lights and electrical stuff in the truck work fine. Oh, and the OD light on the gear shift flashes. I hope that it is something like this causing the transmission problems because I really don't have the cash to rebuild or buy another transmission. Any info or advise would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Chuck

chuck my name is robert first a formost welcome to the forum, the OD light is flashing hmmm does your reverse work fine? in a 93 you should have a E4OD Electronic 4 Speed Over Drive transmissions in older aplicationslike a c6 the dash and what not wouldnt affect it but im not sure if they will effect the E4OD aka E 4 OH DAMN cause its electronicly driven i would try cheap fixes first take it to a quick lube and have a tranny flush done on it ad then take it home and replace the tranny fluid filter and use some new tranny fluid, bad thing is your going to waste the new fluid the quick lube put in it but you dont want to change the filter before you flush it cause when you flush it it will get all the gunk in the new filter and you will be right back in the same perdicament also pick you up some TRANS X STOP HARD SHIFT FORMULA its in a Blue can at auto crap or oriellys it works wonders truck me good luck chuck welcome to the forum again

Pre-Power Stroke Diesel (7.3L IDI & 6.9L) - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums Here is a link to the page for your engine. Great guys there for any engine problems and some good trans guys there as well.
For the engine you need to make sure that the fuel and air filters are good as a first step.
You have an E4OD trans and for it to operate properly you have to have the tach and speedo working. It would be as well not to drive it too much until you get the problems fixed.
First thing is to check that all fuses are good.
The tach is driven from the tach sensor which in on the injector pump housing just beside the engine oil filler. It looks like a large nut with two wires coming from it. Check that the wires at the sensor are good with no cracked insulation.
The speedo gets its signal from a sensor on the top of the rear differential housing. Maybe pull it and clean it and see if that helps. Check that the wiring is good and that the plug connector at the end of the wiring pigtail is clean and tight.

Thanks Robert! Yeah it does have the E4OD and reverse works fine. I had decided that I was gonna get the speedometer, tachometer, and odometer working and go from there. I'll also do the tranny flush/filter replacement like you suggested and hopefully that'll take care of the problem. I'd like to get this truck up and running like it should, other than this problem it's in really good shape for a 18 year old truck!

Okay so I got the tachometer working, it was the #17 fuse. I replaced the VSS sensor in the rear end and the speedometer and odometer still isn't working. All of the other gauges in the dash cluster are working fine. I pulled the dash cluster and checked to see if the wires running to the speedometer have power and they're showing 12 volts. I had a friend hook it up on his computer and it's still throwing the code for the speed sensor. I got the speed sensor at Advance Auto Parts and it doesn't look exactly like the one that I took out of it. The one that NAPA carries looks just like the original so I'm gonna try one of them. If that still doesn't fix it and since the wires running to the speedometer have power does that only leave the speedometer itself as the problem?
