How far should the fan be from the radiator?

For maximum cooling effectiveness? I've seen them as close as 1" and as far as 6". Need to do everything I can to maximize my cooling potential, and as my fan is 4.5" from the radiator I was wondering if there were benefits from moving it 2" closer. Thanks.

I think the more important thing is to have a good fan shroud. So long as the fan is pulling air through the radiator, it shouldn't matter if it's a couple of inches one way or the other so long as the shroud is there. Just my opinion.

your 100% correct, of course. I'm building my own shroud, but thought I'd determine optimum fan placement before I tacked the sheetmetal together. I talked to a tech at flex-a-lite and they said that without a shroud the closer the better (leaving a minimum of 1" for engine flex), with a shroud it doesn't matter provided the shroud fits tight and the fan is at least 50% inside the shroud housing. I think I'll pick up a 2" spacer which will put my fan 2 1/2" away from the radiator and build the shroud accordingly.
