I have a 83 ford f-350 that is a rollback. the cab is rotted out i was going to change the cab but i got a 95 f-250 4x4. would i be able to cut the frames and weld them together or is this a bad idea?

why not just swap the cab on the 95 to the 83 or axels and rollback from 83 to 95 with different springs

I would still have to stretch the frame to work with the length of the rollback if i did it that way anyway. so i was figuring to cut the frames just behind the cab and weld them together. the frames are differant widths so i would fill the gaps with steel and reinforce them however i can but the added benefit of the newer cab for one thing then the 4x4 would be great but i dont know if it will work. and i think swaping the cabs is going to be more work than welding the frames. just looking for opinions.

what are you trying to achieve ? did you want a 4x4 rollback ? if so then the front I beams should bolt up to the f350 from the f250 4x4 and fab up the spring mounts for the leafs up front !

more than anything the cab is rotted on the 83 and the updated 95 cab is alot better than the 83 in many ways. the 4x4 is a added bonus if i can get it to work.

if you have to ask if you can weld the frames together you are not qualified to do it. that may sound harsh but its in your best interest not to attempt

Depends on what kinda rollback it is, if its an F super duty (not really an F350 but thats what badges might say) your gonna run into an issue. Look on the door jamb sticker, whats it say, incomplete vehicle, etc?

Does it have a regular front axle or a much heavier solid beam, is the rear drum or disc-disc means it has a heavier axle. The frame of the 83 might also be heavier overall not just in the bed but int he cab area.

Hard to really help without pics.

The rollback is the regular 350 not the superduty. the 83's frame is wider than the 95's all the way but if i reinforce it at the joint i dont think it will break. actally i saw a f250 rollback with the frame welded like i want to do on ebay. so i guess it can be done.

Personally I would not weld a frame for a rollback at the cab....

The frame of the 83 is heavier built so I would fab the mounts and perches to fit the 95 cab and gear.

just my .02

1995 Ford F250 Flatbed with Wheel lift - eBay (item 140528374206 end time Apr-05-11 17:37:24 PDT)

This is a link to the f250 rollback on ebay. im not sure if the whole frame is a f250 which i doubt but as you can see in one of the pics the frame was welded together. Im pretty sure as long as the welding is done properly and reinforced good this should work.

Skip trying to cut and weld the two frames together to make the frame wider, stretch the frame on the F250 and fishplate the welds, then put the rollback assy onto the newer one. It will be safer and stronger that way. A local semi repair shop should be able to either do the job for you or point you to a shop that does frame stretching.

Just my thoughts but if you do it i'd make sure the frames are the same thickness (welding two things together like that, that are different thicknesses can cause issues) also would make sure you dont cut the frames straight. Z them or something and like mentioned above fishplate them with steel thats the same thickness and burn it all in REAL good (better then that one on ebay) and dont be afraid to tail out the weld. Just my 2 cents, good luck.
