not looking for a boner contest here, but I would like to know what STANDARD tire size many people are running on their trucks. I have a 05 s crew F150 4x4. Just a basic XLT with a 5.4. It currently has stock 17 inch wheels and stock, factory sized tired on it. I am needing to replace my tires and the local tire shop does not have my size in stock, but has the next larger size.
Will these tires fit and function well ? I have always had superduty trucks in the past, and opted for the 285/16 over the stock 265/16 pizza cutters. I never had a clearance issue and my mileage stayed close to the same. Again, I am not looking for a lifted look, but if many others are running a size larger than stock and it works well, I will give it a try.
Have seen many trucks running a 265/70/17 as they are more common than the stock 255. I ran a 285/70/17 before my leveling kit with no clearance issues have a buddy doing the same on his stock truck.
You can run anything below a 33" diameter and less than 12" wide on the stock wheels without a leveling kit.
I believe that a 285/70/17 will fit perfectly without problems for your stock 4wd.
oh yeah, i was not trying to win a BONER contest when i got 35's, i got stuck in snow way to easy with that size tire and told myself i did not want anything to do with the pos shovel i had to use for hours last year to get out of my driveway, then again to get out of my mother in laws driveway. this year i went with ease through 10 inches of snow and through the 2 foot high plow trail at the top of my driveway.
I have the same general question. The (el cheapo - Starfire?) tires on my 2004 are almost bald. I have a vanilla 2004 XLT with 4Wd and the 5.4. The current tires are 265/70/17 and they seem to have worked just fine.
I plan on getting Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor tires, which aren't available in 265... only the stock 255. So I'm actually switching smaller.
My spare (also bald) is also a 265, so I'll be getting 5. It isn't an inexpensive venture, but it doesn't seem to me like the 255s and 265s will be visually all that different.
But for you, I can say that the 265s worked just fine on the stock 17" rims.
