They are a great running engine usually. Finding parts isnt as simple as a Cummins, but they're still available. If it's $500, then go for it. You can get a running core from a bone yard for $1500.

If my mind serves me correctly, this is the ford I-6 diesel eng. that were made in brazil. If it is, these engines had alot ofproblems with the cylinder walls . They would get pin holes & coolant would leak into cylinder, most times it would leak into oil pan. I have seen several engines do this. One was a jasper reman. Very expensive to fix, has to be bored & sleeved. Hope that helps.

They are the Brazilian made New Halland Fords. As with any engine, neglect leads to all sorts of problems. Sometimes, there's a few bad seeds in the batch during manufacturing. Just like the Powerstroke 6 litre, some are a nightmare, but there's thousands of em going strong. I'm just saying, a few bad experiences doenst make the whole lineup junk.

the only thing to worry about with the 6.6 and 7.8 engines is the oil pump.
around 10 years ago, i needed an oil pump for a 7.8 when i did a rebuild on it at 800,000 miles because the pump in it was wore out. i could not buy a new one anywhere.
luckily i found a block that threw a rod, and was able to get the pump out of that engine.

i don't know if they are available now or not, but back then they were not.

Was that truck price, or just the engine?

Kits for the early engines are only available through the dealers, and are pretty spendy. The later engine kits are available through the aftermarket, except for the high horsepower version. Reviva has reman engines available, and supply them to Sterling dealers, but are also expensive.

As someone earlier said, you probably have pin holes in the cylinder walls. We used to swap one of these engines a week when I worked in a Ford truck shop. We would take the old engines and bore and sleeve them so we always had a spare.
